basically if you have it set to off, it'll never shutdown unless you do it manually.  It won't shut down normally if you're recording with it, but if its just sitting there doing nothing and you have idle shutdown active at like 5 mins for example, it'll shut down after 5 mins.  This can be handy if you're forgetful and don't want to waste batteries.

i usually have mine set for 5 minutes, cuz at the end of the show when i stop recording i just start throwing stuff in the bag so i can get the hell out of there, or i'm a bit too drunk to pay attention to some of the details.  i get forgetful at times, so its handy to have it on so if i forget to turn the nomad off, it'll go off automatically.

i use 1.40.06, you can find it here

To upgrade the firmware just have the nomad plugged into the wall, it won't do it with just batteries inside.  Plug it into your computer with firewire/usb and click the .exe file...your puter should do the rest.

also, this info will be really helpful.  once you're in the rescue mode, you can choose the format all option.  it'll delete all the data off your drive, so you'll be left with pretty much a brand new player.  the 1.40 firmware will still be present, but all the original settings will go back to the factory default, so you'll have to change some settings back.

i format my drive before every recording adventure, just to be safe - ever since i started doing it, i haven't had a problem with pops or glitches.

alright, one more q then, so i first tried to get my firewire running w/ the jb3, and when that windows xp logo warning comes on the screen,i accidentally hit, "cancel installation" instead of "continue", now i cannot FOR THE LIFE OF ME get the firewire to even show up,when i plug the usb in, it automatically recognizes it as a new device like it did for the firewire the first time, but i dont want usb, id rather have firewire running

so if anyone knows how i can get that firewire port to show up when connected w/ the jb3, then id be GREATLY appreciative ;)

i dont get it,it fired right up for installationof new hardware, and then, BAM, when i fudged the first installation, it went to hell

When the JB3 is plugged in look inyour device manager. Do you see it listed with a "!" by it? Hopefully you do. Delete it from device manager and then unplug the firewire and plug it back it in. That should re-detect it.

hmm, that problem is in windows somewhere, you have to turn off an option somewhere, or start the option over again.  i dunno where tho, try looking thru your device manager or your my computer properties.

actually, i don't really know, but thats what i'm guessing...
