Years ago I was at a mastering session with sc V or maybe VI's. I put it in the back of my mind that I would like to have a set of these one day. Just for kicks, what are people thoughts about these speakers. I know the company is out of business and replacement parts may be hard to find.

Are there any comparable speakers to look at, or maybe a diy option?

If you have the space, and the amplifiers, they are really top shelf.  The other problem is that your crappy recordings will sound their crappiest while your good recordings will sound amazing.  They are a microscope that will show you every wart and flaw in the recording and the rest of your chain.  Pure bliss when you get the rest right tho.

any idea of what they cost nowadys?


i fell in love with the dunlavy's on first listen. not worried about them being too revealing, more about price, age and service.

I followed Linkwitz's development of the Orion over the past 10 years and you used to be able to build a pair for about $2500 or so.  I think that has gone up significantly since, but I haven't payed as much active attention in the past few years.  AFAIK the turnkey prebuilt pairs go for something like 10 grand.  As dipoles, you need to have a room where you can place them correctly, far enough away from the back wall.  John K's NaO designs are dynamic driver based dipoles with a similar design concept, which you may also want to take a look at if considering building the Orions.

anyone have experience with the magneplanar speakers?

someone mentioned to me a long time ago that i would like them, but have never heard any of them.

maybe a pair of their lower cost models and a good sub would be a decent combination?

I love Maggies, they rock.  However they are not for everyone, go listen for yourself.

I used the low end Maggies for a while, the MMGs at the time.  (Not sure of their current lineup.)  I just loved the sound -- simply stunning detail, transient response, and imaging, though lacking in low end.  I paired them with a fast, musical sub, the Pinnacle Babyboomer, and found the combination outstanding.  The sweet spot was small, but I didn't (still don't) need a large multi-person sweet spot, and they sounded plenty good outside the sweetspot for casual listening.  I found they require substantial space around them to shine -- especially behind and to the sides.  I gave up the MMGs since my listening space is just too small, and now use a pair of Von Schweikert VR-2s which, even though they're quite large, do better in my limited space (primarily due to the adjustable rear-firing tweeter).  If I had a bigger listening space, I wouldn't hesitate to go back to the bigger 1.x or 3.x Maggies.  If I recall, the MMGs were rated 4-ohm and so required an amp capable of handling them, so if you do go with a Magnepan model, check the current specs to ensure you're able to drive them sufficiently.

what is the minimum square footage you would recommend?

i'm a ways out from setting up a room but i plan on something fairly large.

 used 1.x and 3.x seem reasonably priced
