COUNTRYMAN ISOMAX II what do you think about it??
« on: August 02, 2009, 05:18:02 PM »
Hi,
I'm running a set of dpa 4061 and looking for a small cardiod set of microphone.
I would like your comments about a set of      COUNTRYMAN ISOMAX II, is it a good choice?

How is the sound quality?
Close to my DPA4061?
Thanks in advance

If I remember correctly, these aren't cardiods but hypercardioids.
Never tried them myself, but I have a few Pearl Jam shows from 1996 that were recorded with them, and they sound good for the most part.

In my opinion, getting them in addition to your 4061s only makes sense if you often find yourself recording from further back. Otherwise, those DPAs can't really be beat.

I have a set and for the most part I'm pretty happy with them, I find they work best up close though.

The one downfall with them (at least mine) is the huge xlr plugs on them and they want 48v to run them.  This makes it a little trickier when running stealth.

I bought them last year after downloading a radiohead show recorded with them, it was amazing and I decided I needed those mics.

From what I understand the binaurals can be modified to have them terminate into a single 1/8 stereo mini and run from a battery box.  I had a friend try that with mine and it didn't work out very well, signal was incredibly quiet.

Hope that helps

These come in cardioid, hypercardioid, and omni patterns...

I don't know how much of an effect the termination has, but these mics are pretty quiet regardless.  The sensitivity is around -57 dB (~ 1.4 mV/Pa), which puts them in the range of a lot of dynamic mics...More than 12 dB less sensitive than a 4061, for example...Maybe a pre (with a decent amount of gain) would help?

IMHO based on those same Pearl Jam recordings referred to below, and some others, you might be better off with something else at this point (Church Audio, Audix microcaps w/ Church active cables, AT U853, etc) that has a little richer sound and doesn't use full size XLRs or need phantom.  I always found the isomax a touch thin sounding.

If you want hypers Sound Professionals has a new SP-CMC-25 hypercardiod mic out that many are curious about... Could be worth trying them out at least.
Mics: Schoeps MK4V, MK41V, MK5, MK22> CMC6, KCY 250/5, KC5, NBob; MBHO MBP603/KA200N, AT 3031, DPA 4061 w/ d:vice, Naiant X-X, AT 853c, shotgun, Nak300
Pres/Power: Aerco MP2, tinybox v2  [KCY], CA-UBB
Decks: Sound Devices MixPre 6, Zoom F8, M10, D50

Thin sounding.  That's my opinion when I (briefly) tried these mics.  Ambient only was recorded, but it sounded thin.

Don't confuse these with the B3 and B6 lav mics, though.  The B mics sound fantastic, better than anything but the Nevaton MKE400 IMO.

Please DO NOT mail me with tech questions.  I will try to answer in the forums when I get a chance.  Thanks.
