anybody run a pre amp in front of an ACM PMD 671?
« on: March 26, 2008, 03:08:53 AM »
I have a Sound Devices MP2 on the way to run behind the MBHOs.  Gonna run line in into the 671.  Just wondering about the -20db cut on the 671.  Should I leave it on or turn it off since I will only be using the A>D  in the 671?

I'm pretty sure the pad doesn't effect the line in, just the mic in. Not 100% sure on that though...

Leave it off if you are running line-in.  Is the 671 modified?  If it is modified, you don't need the MP-2.  If it is not modified, run with the pad off.  If you are worried about volume clipping or whatever, use the pad on the microphones instead of on the preamp or A/D.  You should not really be too concerned about clipping unless you are taping Hellhammer at the stacks or something crazy like that.

Actually, better yet, on the Sonic Sense website (www.sonicsense.com), under their resources section or whatever, there is a really handy and useful guide to reaching parity on your preamp and A/D.  I have used it and while the written description sounds convoluted, follow the directions step by step and it works really, really well.  Try that and see how it works for you.  And if you need a "white noise generator" or whatever they recommend, I turned my 15 year-old TV to a static channel and turned the volume up really loud, and it worked perfectly well.

It is modded, but I am using the mp2 to add a little warmth.
