Busting out the KM184's tonight for the first time, big room, hopefully in the sweet spot about 40' from the stage--I'm thinking ortf.

Update: Turns out the mic clips that came with are some flimsy Beyerdynamic ones that don't fit anyway...lol

Anyone have some advice on some nice clips/shockmounts etc. for DIN or ORTF that don't require protractors and endless re-screwing in to my stereo bar? (I swear that I spend 80-90% of my setup time at shows screwing around with this--drives me nuts!)

Either that or din.  What room?

at that distance, i would agree with DIN or NOS, as you wont need the broader stereo angle provided by ORTF.  but ORTF will almost always work okay if you are unsure of your best option.

Since I've been running the 140s I find that there is very little coloration of the sound picked up off axis...so if you want to run a wider angle and can do it without picking up too much room I say go for it. I've run ORTF a couple of times but I was closer than 40 ft. More like 20 ft or less.

I ran my 140s X/Y for years but have become particularly fond of teh separation that I get running them ORTF.

FWIW, I do 95% of my recording from on stage.

Thanks for all the tips! I ended up going with DIN, mostly because that was what I could get with my stereo bar, but I also ended up farther back in the room then I wanted. I was pleased with the results, but a little surprised with how much room noise I got, they seem to have less throw than other mics I've used.

Anyone ever go less than 90 with good results?

Mark--I was at the Crystal Ballroom, taping the Swell Season.

Unless I'm onstage at the Crystal I always go DIN or NOS from the drink rail.

What were you used to running at the Crystal?  Hypers?  There's your difference.  FWIW I think 483's sound the best in that room.

For shock mounts, stereo bars, anyone use any of this for 184's?

http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-SHM-12

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/534727-REG/K_M_23550_500_55_23550_Adjustable_Microphone_Bar.html

The stereo bar is OK, but the shock mounts look pretty cheap and horrible.

I would only use a Rycote InVision for this.

The INV-7 would be the one you want.

I have changed over all my mounts to these and will also get the new InVision Studio mounts for my side-fire mics when they come out in February.

I'm kind of a fan of inexpensive, though. Cheap and horrible is bad, however. Those rycotes look nice, but are over $120 for a pair.

Anyone else have suggestions on good, inexpensive stuff for the 184's?

Looks like they fit nicely into my bd shotgun clips, not so well into the at stuff.

I couple pieces of gaffers tape on the inside and the busman mounts work perfect.  Super cheap.  And small like the Schoeps mount.

Those rycotes look nice, but are over $120 for a pair.

But less than one-sixth of the price of the Neumann mount - in the UK the Rycotes are £30 each and the Neumanns are £197 each.

And the Rycote is better than anything else, whatever the price.

The only other mount that comes close are the very expensive Osix - the only other worth considering is the Shure donut (if it fits).

Yes!   I love using 60deg/30cm or 40deg/35cm w/ my KM184's, depending on the situation.

Here's a few shots of the 140's with a vark bar and busman shocks ORTF.  What I'm gonna run onstage tomorrow night.
