Title: Klipsch KG 5.5 speakers
Post by: spyder9 on March 04, 2017, 10:06:00 AM
I have any opportunity to buy a set of Klipsch KG 5.5's for $300.   Really good price.  However, these things are 'yuge'!  Like 70 lbs each.  I'm wondering what improvement I'd get over my dependable Klipsch KG 4's.  Any opinions?

Current setup:

Marantz SR7500
Klipsch KG 4 - front
Klipsch KG 2.5 - rear
Klipsch KV3 - center

Huge is right but that is a great price on a top notch floor speaker! Are they black or stained oak version?

As for a comparison, both are great floor standing speakers. The 5.5 will give you much more bass with the two 10" woofers and the tractrix horn is hard to beat.

They're Black.  I closed the deal this past Sunday.  Too good to pass up.  They match perfectly with the 2.5's and the KV-3.  Now it's time to sell the 12 year old receiver and invest in a modern one.  I'm looking at a Sony ZA3000ES as a possibility.  Preferably a used one.

Glad to see this panned out for you, D.  Time to piss off the neighbors with that extra bottom end.

Pick anything else up from the gotta-move motivated seller?

Spot-on, Kyle!  I played Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks" last night.  For a moment there, I thought Bob was in the room.   :headphones:

Sounds like a great deal!   I wonder if these were the predecessor to KLF 20's which I have and love!  These also have 2x10"'s, but with 2 horns for mid and tweeter. According to the Klipsch website, the 5.5's were first introduced in 1994 and manufactured until 1997, while the KLF 20's were first introduced in 1996 and manufactured until 2001, so some overlap...

Congrats!    :clapping:

Now all you need is a 12"+ subwoofer!

Here's my Klipsch story. Grew up with this guy who worked in a really good hi-fi shop. Early eighties. We used to crank GD Go to Heaven on La Scalas and Horns. Quite the experience. The ultimate was a barn party with La Scalas and "Waiting for Columbus". Serious speakers. Only bummer was my buddy always complained about them. The horns were to annoying after long sessions. When it was time for me to purchase he talked me into ADS L 1290's biamped. I still have them for two channel but my 5.1 is Klipsch.

According to the Klipsch forums, the KG 5.5's and the KLF 10's are practically twins, sans the port holes on the 10's.  They are both 2 way.  KLF 20's and 30's are 3 way.  The KLF C7 center speaker is supposed to be the cream of the crop.  That said, if I were ever to upgrade from the 5.5's, I'd skip the KLF line and go straight to Cornwalls......... lol  :yack:

That makes sense.  I have the C7 also, and it's a good one for sure.    The KLF 20's are ported in the back, not sure about the KLF 10's.
