Portable Recorder with AES or SPDIF inputs
« on: June 28, 2023, 10:40:10 AM »
I have been looking around, but can't find any portable recorders with AES or SPDIF inputs (in new models).

Am I missing something?

Let me know if you know of one.  I really don't want a used / discontinued unit.  I think I might be out of luck.

Thanks -

Aaron

If you are only needing two channels then -

Marantz PMD661 - the newest the mkiii version has a "feature" where the coax input is controlled by the gain knob. Can be defeated by running the ALC. Seems weird but it works.
Tascam DR100mkiii - has an adapter cable that is a short female RCA to TRS mini plug for the digital input. It comes with it if you buy new.

Both of these turn up new B stock on resale sites all the time if you want to save a few $

Call the OADE's and ask of they have any PMD 661's in stock. I got one from them away after Marantz discontinued them. Long shot, I know.
OTH, it is a bit larger than the typical small decks used these days.
music IS love

When you get confused, listen to the music play!

These are good leads - thanks - exactly what I was looking for.

I ran a v3 for years, but recently picked a new (used) one up in the yard sale (I used to run v3 > microtrack (via SPDIF)).

Due to the limited availability of recorders with a digital in, I was kicking around the idea of running the v3 using the balanced analog XLR outputs > the xlr inputs on a mixpre ii.

I am wondering if the results would be the same as a v2 > mixpre.

May make for a heavier bag and some extra interconnects, but I can tough it out for a show or two.

Guys thanks - I just sent in a $100 offer on the ebay one - if that doesn't work out, I will give the Oade's a ring too.

Great ideas!

I ran my V3 analog out into my R4 for quite a while. The analog outs have some added gain so you have to run the preamp frontend a little lower but it works.

this might be a little weird but i was wondering about something similar this morning

you could get a raspberry pi with a digi i/o card from hifiberry. they make small cases with touchscreens and there are walkthroughs for setting up audacity

the pi, card case etc would run a couple hundred bucks 2" x 6" size thing

The Marantz 561 has a coax digital input. The Oade's mod these as well, so they may have one around
