New Sound Devices 302
« on: April 02, 2003, 10:13:32 PM »
I just saw that this is coming out.  Sound devices is making a 3 channel mixer/preamp.  Looks like a nice unit for those doing 3 mic mixes. Here's a link where I saw it:

Concidering the mp2 is about $625 new I didn't think it was that bad.  I had an mp2 and thought the thing sounded pretty good......hopefully not as good as my new ad1k but I don't know yet.   ;) :'(

I thought the quality of the MP-2 was great, built like a tank

Actually the price seems right on.  If you figure the MP-2 is $625 and is two channel, then it's about $313 per channel so $939 for the three channels plus a little extra for the cool new level meters ;).  I think micsupply is taking pre orders and their price is just over a grand. :o

I'm not a huge fan of the mp-2 myself, i guess it seems difficult for me to justify a 1000+ expendeture just to get that extra channel.... i mean if i was gonna spend that much to get three channels (mind you running 3 channels makes it somewhat hard to stealth) i'd just get two v2s.  Built as well with IMHO better sound than the MP-2.

OK....I could be retarded but how would you get a good 3 mic mix with 2 V2s???   The only thing I can come up with is that the third mic would only be on the left or right channel and not mixed to both....what am I missing? ???

SD products are great for the $$.  I havent heard anything bad from a SD tape.  You can take the MP-2 apart and put it in an Altoid container...talk about stealth!!

for the third mic you would just run one channel in the 2nd v2.  think of it this way, grace makes 3 main models for studio pre's.  the 101 (1 channel) the 201 (2 channels) and the 801 (8 channels)  you can run the 801 with 5 mics in it and still get the same effect.  the v2 doesnt mix down to a stereo mix, it just preamps each channel individually.

i'm a bit confused.  i thought the point of the SD product was to create a 2 channel stereo mix from 3 inputs.  how can you do this with 2 v2's unless you are doing some post mixing?

good point, i hadnt noticed this was doing 3>2 mixdown.  I thought it was just a 3 channel preamp.  i stand corrected!
