Advice Needed
« on: January 28, 2005, 03:33:50 PM »
Right now, I'm running the following setup:  D100< SP-SPSB-6< SP-CMC-8s.
I also just bought a JB3 which I might try out down the line.
My question:  I'd like to improve the performance and sound while KEEPING IT SMALL.
Reading here has left me thinking about modifying my mics for phantom power.
I've also seen a lot of mention about a Denecke AD-20.
Or . . . . should I be setting my sights on a mic upgrade?
I need to be pointed in the right direction.  Help, please . . . .
:)

Depends in large part on your budget.  With a...

  • small budget, I'd upgrade to phantom.
  • medium budget, I'd upgrade to phantom and AD-20 (for the variable gain, I don't think it's a vast improvement over the D100's ADC)
  • BIG budget, I'd upgrade mics / preamp.

I've got a pretty workable budget, Brian ~
Just need to be convinced what I'm sinking my money in. :)

Def go for the Phantom upgrade if nothing else.  Those mics will be able to handle higher SPL's w/out distortion.  If you are gonna do more open taping than stealth, get yourself some Studio Projects, or AKG 300 series mics, they won't break the bank.
