Cheap 128GB micro SD cards on eBay - are they all scams?
« on: January 26, 2015, 10:10:45 PM »
The 64GB micro SD card in my phone is longer enough.  Yes, I really do need that much storage.  128GB can now be had for $100 on Amazon, but there are sellers peddling them on eBay for a huge variety of prices.
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313&_nkw=SanDisk+Ultra+128GB&_sacat=0

What's interesting is that some of the cheaper ones show packaging reading "Speed up to 30 MB/s", whereas on SanDisk's site they only list two variants that are 40 MB/s and 48 MB/s.  Are the 30 MB/s ones I'm seeing an earlier, now discontinued version?  Or are they BS cards?

I'd bet 90% of the ebay cards are counterfeit.  I've gotten burned on every one I've ever bought on ebay (well not burned--paypal has always come through with a refund).  The ones I got were actually smaller cards hacked to report larger sizes.  When you get above the actual size, it starts overwriting files already on the card (at least this was my experience with a card reporting itself as 64G, but only held 32G before giving errors on the files already there).

^ Yeah only buy cards from a few strictly legit retailers unless you like fooling around with refunds and risking stuff with counterfeits (most of which are hacked as noted above).  B&H is about as inexpensive as the real ones will get unless there is some sort of discount/sale somewhere else legit.

That's what I figured, I was just wondering if anyone had positive experiences with them.  I'll wait for the legit ones to go on sale.

Office Depot/Office Max run sales constantly. If you don't see any on the shelf at the store, they'll order them in for you and honor the price. I just got 2 a couple weeks ago, one for my M10 and another for my camera.
Mics: 3 Zigma Chi HA-FX (COL-251, c, h, o-d, o-f) / Avenson STO-2 / Countryman B3s

GAKables
Dead Muppets

My recordings LMA / BT / TTD
