MG300 with MP-2->Mod SBM-1
« on: November 12, 2003, 09:36:20 AM »
Anyone have any opinions on how this combo would sound.  I have heard the MG300s with a w-mod UA-5, but I am curious as to thoughts on the MP-2->Mod SBM-1....

Thoughts?

Nick

Will sound good if you like a nice dank sound.

I have a pretty dark sound as it is now running the 391(3)s...kinda curious what I could expect to hear.....a darker sound?  better highs?  Thoughts are appreciated!

same thing I was thinking. Geffels are known for phat bass, then feed it through a mp-2 which is basey, then into the very warm sbm-1. Could sound great if you like that dark, dank bass sound.

i am really wanting to try the mp2 > mod sbm-1 with my mbho's. the bottom end on some of my w-mod tapes is really nice and tight at times and am curious if the warmth of the combo would slop things up. i know the detail would be great with the mod-sbm1.

I ran MG 210's > Mp 2 > mod sbm for almost 2 years.  I found that your results will totally depend on how you run the Mp 2 > mod sbm with regards to gain level on Mp 2 and rec level on the mod.  IMO, the base is a little sloppy with the Mp 2 gain ran hot.  In fact, run the mod sbm rec level wide open, and the gain on the Mp 2 as low as possible.  You may have heard this before, but it is very true.  Also, much depends on how you run your mics.  Start with your basic XY 90* for this is a good reference.  However, even with my hyper caps, I enjoy listening to my tapes with the mics set up in the DIN format.  All in all, nice sound in a small package.  Just remember, wide open rec level on the mod sbm and then adjust your gain accordingly.  Hope this helps.

Much agreed!  I truly lost sleep for several weeks when deciding between the 480's and the MG 210's.  Both offer distinct flavor, but both very silky.  One option you should seriously consider, I noticed someone was selling the Jim Williams modified 460's a couple of weeks ago.  Not sure if anyone picked them up or not, but you want to talk about some swEEEEEEEt mics.  Brother!  Look and see if those puppies are still available and for how much.  Take care.

I'm sure if Dustin saw this he'd chime in and say the m300 > mp-2 > mod sbm-1 combo is great ;)

I ran that exact combo when I had mbho's, and though I preferred V2-->modbsm-1 more, the mp-2--modsbm-1 does sound nice. I truely miss my modsbm-1, and wish I had it back for stealth work.

alright, so I borrowed a set of MG300s from my friend Andrew and these things smoke with the MP-2->Mod SBM-1.....recorded a local rock band tonight (Melbourne) at a shitty venue (the Brewery) that had way too much bass, and the tape is incredible.....these mics have a sense of clarity that I have not heard from the 391s.  Not knocking the 391s...more a compliment to the gefells!

More listening necessary....will post as I do!
