Another UA-5 thread.
« on: November 19, 2003, 04:41:56 PM »
What do you think - warm mod or presence mod with Neuman KM-184's?

I record in small bars to outdoor festivals....

I'm leaning towards the warm mod because of the high frequency emphasis of the mics...anyone have experience?

thanks!!!

HF emphasis? I don't hear it with those mics. I think Pat Nobles uses a W-mod with his 184s - maybe he'll post here.

I wonder if Doug has kept stats on W vs. P mods he's done. It seems that there are MANY more W-mods out there.
Out of the game … for now?

I agree. Those mics are on the warmer side.
I bet the  presence vs. warm mod ratio is 10/1 in favour of the warm mod. I haven't heard many p-mod recordings either.

I know someone with one...he's on here.  Maybe I can get ahold of a p-mod and run some p-mod->mme shootouts for you guys.  It's funny, everyone compares the warm mod to the apogee, then dogs the apogee when compared to the v3, which is often compared to the v3.  Go figure.

If I can get my shit together in time, I'm gonna do a V3 v. warm-mod-UA5 comp this Thu.  Should be fun...

I think the neumanns have a little sizzle to the top end, they're colored for sure but they have a brighter top end... not a bad thing but I hear it too.

By the way I choose the pmod becuase I thought it would tighten up the low end of the Neumanns...

i think that was a good choics and i gotta hear it, but i do believe that a transparent pre with good highs is good solution for the very warm neumann 18x series and the km1xx series but not as much as the former
