Sony HDR CX900/B
« on: April 13, 2014, 10:59:03 AM »
So i stepped up recently from my old HDR HC9 to a brand new CX900/B, Sony's new 1" detector videocamera. I didn't get the 4K camera because i don't have 4k anything else and don't plan on getting any of that for years. What i was looking for was increased low light sensitivity and a sharper image. I am extremely happy with the new camera, used it once so far to capture Prezident Brown and Lee Tafari. There is a bit of a learning curve as first i had to update my operating system on my mac to Mavericks, then i had to get the new Final Cut Pro X, to be able to edit it. After several days of messing around i made a video i was happy with: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Kby9CtNZxI . Audio from my dpa 4061 mics. The camera is not light, but only slightly heavier than my old one. The active anti shake software is phenomenal! The cam even lowered the audio recording level to where it did not distort, something i have never experienced with a videocamera at a reggae show. I still didn't use it as it was not better than the dpa 4061's, but it is useable. The FV70 battery lasts about three hours, and a 64 GB SD card holds 7 plus hours of video. A step up indeed.

Anyone else getting one of these?

I'm thinking of upgrading to this from my CX520.  My trusty 520 has served me well and there's really nothing wrong with it but the larger sensor of the 900 appeals to me.  Regarding the SDXC capacity as a tradeoff to the 520's onboard flash memory that has its pros and cons but I could certainly live with it.  The only thing holding me back is the lack of small high quality 62mm tele lenses for the 900.  So far the only option I've been able to find is the Raynox DCR-2025PRO 2.2x but that's a little big for my taste.  The OEM 1.7x tele I've been using with my 520 has a much smaller form factor and I was hoping to find a similarly sized lens for the 900.  Though on second thought the 520 is 37mm whereas the 900 is 62mm--I suppose to accommodate the larger sensor--so a smaller tele for the 900 may not be possible.

Thoughts?

I don't have the cx900 but it appears that your cx520 lens is 5.5mm to 66.0 and adding your 1.7 extender gets you out to 112.2mm.

The cx900 is also 12x but starts at 9.3 and goes to 111.6mm virtually the same range you were getting on the cx520 with the 1.7 tele extender.

Also the cx900 has a 24x smart zoom getting you out to 223.2mm and also finally has the digital zoom(i know everyone is afraid of the digital extender).

So although 2 cameras are 12x zoom they are not equal as this shows.

Hi beatkilla,

Thank you for your reply.  I am wanting to understand your explanation but I'm not sure I'm following due to my less-than-well-versed knowledge of optics.  I understand you are referring to focal lengths.  When you say the cx900 fully zoomed in has virtually the same range as the cx520 with the 1.7x extender (because the focal lengths are the same), are you saying the images I see in the viewfinder (and the final uncropped images) will be the same?  i.e. that there is no need to use an extender with the cx900 if I'm happy with the "zoom" I'm getting now with the cx520?

The way I'm processing this, is that if both cameras (with no tele extenders) are zoomed out to infinity the image seen in the cx900 will appear "closer."  So if they are both fully zoomed in at 12x the cx900 image will also still appear closer even though the total magnification will be the same.

Am I understanding this correctly?  If I am then my problem is solved--no big-ass non-stealthy tele.

Also, I'm hazy about the Smart Zoom.  Sony seems to be saying that that is NOT digital zoom so the image won't be degraded.  Is that accurate?  If it is I'll be even happier.    ;D
