Essence of the 4.7k mod?

Wiring mics using Church's mod, is it basically attenuating the signal?

It does reduce the gain and it reduces the distortion at the same time. It is the same as 3 wire with respect to the gain reduction and distortion.

Not a problem, I should state that you actually lose less gain with my mod over three wire  ;)

One thing would be interesting for me: Why isn´t it possible ot build the mod into an adapter cable, so I could use a mic as high or low sens mic depending on the situation?

Yes only if your mic is three wire... But not if its two wire with out doing a mod to the 2 wire capsule. Its not just a matter of sticking a pair of 4.7k resistors in series with the ground and signal path.
