In the 10+ years since the sbm-1 was designed there may have been a few advances in ADC circuits in high end recorders.  JUST SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT! 8)

True, and there's no doubt been a ton of progress made in the portable pre-amp dept. since the Oade M148 was introduced...yet people still want that sound. If you like the sound of an SBM1, go for it....
Right now nothing...in the past: Schoeps CMC6, AKG 480, AKG 460, AKG 414, MBHO 603a, Neumann KM100, ADK TL>Schoeps MK4, Schoeps MK2, Schoeps MK41, AKG ck61, AKG ck62, AKG ck63, Neumann AK40, Neumann AK50, MBHO ka200>Lunatec V2, Lunatec V3, Apogee Mini-Me, Oade M148, Oade M248, Sound Devices MP2, Sonosax SXM2>Sony (mod)SBM1, Apogee AD500>D7, D8, D100, M1, R1, R4, R09, iRiver HP120, Microtrack

it [Mini-MP] has the identical pre to the track 2

Not true.  Per Chris Lawson at Apogee support:

Quote
The Mini-Mp and Trak-2 share some of the design philosophy. But are totally different in parts and implementation. What they have in common is a transimpedance input stage with dual DC servo's. However, because of cost and powerconsumption the Mini-MP circuitry is not as elaborate as the Trak-2. The Mini-MP is designed around an off the shelf Instrumentation amplifier while the Trak-2 circuitry is designed with an assortment of very high quality individual opamps. Other differences are the digital gain control of the Trak-2 and the fully balanced signal path from input to output (with active common mode rejection circuitry, so "the problem" is never passed on to the next device).

and lots of people prefer turntables and analog records to cds, dats, 24 bit HD recordings.....advances don't necessarily mean better to everyone's ears. There are quite a few analog GD recordings that hold up really well to me.

I'm gonna have to jump in and ask why would you want run anything into the sbm-1 when you have 24 bit capabilities?

how do you know he can do 24 bit? not all of us can

Well since he's getting a Microtrack and already has a 670, the guy has 24 bit capabilities.  I hear ya though, get the sound you like.  Just jumping in to give him something else to think about since ALOT of folks are ditching the sbm-1 now that the new recorders sound sweet on their own.
