fyi - that button does the same thing in the previous firmware - it's just not seamless.  There's a 10 second or less delay.  You can usually find some point where that works when you've got up to 3 hours to do it.

I got teh seamless track splitting to work just fine, well, acutally it worked perfect. Very happy with it. Victor Wooten did one 3.5 hour set so I had no choice. I hit the FF button and after it saved it was already on 7 seconds of the new recording. Went home, put them together and you cant even tell.  ;D

Check out the Yahoo JB3 group.  People seem very happy with the new firmware, and no reported bugs.  I am using it, and it is working great so far.

A note about the "seamless" recording.  It is not absolutely seamless, unfortunately, there is a very small but noticeable break.  Taken from Yahoo groups:

When you are finished recording, press the [STOP] button (the one below the
[>] or [PLAY] button). You will see a prompt that says "Processing ..."
while the file is being closed, then "Saved".  With OS 1.40.06, when you
press the FastForward [>>] button, the Jukebox will save the current recording
and start a new file with a very minimal gap.  Creative claims a "seamless"
transition (implying no dropped samples), however users report between 10-30
samples are actually dropped.  This is less than a half-second and is much
faster than a DAT tape change is.  :)

i've seriously had success with every firmware update i've downloaded as long as i keep it clean (formatted/disc cleanup) before i go recording.

basically if you have it set to off, it'll never shutdown unless you do it manually.  It won't shut down normally if you're recording with it, but if its just sitting there doing nothing and you have idle shutdown active at like 5 mins for example, it'll shut down after 5 mins.  This can be handy if you're forgetful and don't want to waste batteries.

i usually have mine set for 5 minutes, cuz at the end of the show when i stop recording i just start throwing stuff in the bag so i can get the hell out of there, or i'm a bit too drunk to pay attention to some of the details.  i get forgetful at times, so its handy to have it on so if i forget to turn the nomad off, it'll go off automatically.

i use 1.40.06, you can find it here

To upgrade the firmware just have the nomad plugged into the wall, it won't do it with just batteries inside.  Plug it into your computer with firewire/usb and click the .exe file...your puter should do the rest.

also, this info will be really helpful.  once you're in the rescue mode, you can choose the format all option.  it'll delete all the data off your drive, so you'll be left with pretty much a brand new player.  the 1.40 firmware will still be present, but all the original settings will go back to the factory default, so you'll have to change some settings back.

i format my drive before every recording adventure, just to be safe - ever since i started doing it, i haven't had a problem with pops or glitches.

alright, one more q then, so i first tried to get my firewire running w/ the jb3, and when that windows xp logo warning comes on the screen,i accidentally hit, "cancel installation" instead of "continue", now i cannot FOR THE LIFE OF ME get the firewire to even show up,when i plug the usb in, it automatically recognizes it as a new device like it did for the firewire the first time, but i dont want usb, id rather have firewire running

so if anyone knows how i can get that firewire port to show up when connected w/ the jb3, then id be GREATLY appreciative ;)

i dont get it,it fired right up for installationof new hardware, and then, BAM, when i fudged the first installation, it went to hell

When the JB3 is plugged in look inyour device manager. Do you see it listed with a "!" by it? Hopefully you do. Delete it from device manager and then unplug the firewire and plug it back it in. That should re-detect it.

hmm, that problem is in windows somewhere, you have to turn off an option somewhere, or start the option over again.  i dunno where tho, try looking thru your device manager or your my computer properties.

actually, i don't really know, but thats what i'm guessing...

hmm, you might want to bounce over to www.nomadness.net and ask in their forums, i bet they could tell you how to fix it.  or even try it on the njb3tapers list.

Hold--I don't have my JB3 next to me, but try pushing the power button (a short push and not a long push) and the hold dialogue should come up.  If it doesn't, then you can't hold while recording.

Synchro is for when you have it hooked up to something like a CD player, and when you push "play" on the CD player the JB3 will start the recording at the same time.

I just answered the question about continuous in the past couple of days--go find that.

48/44--if you are recording via optical, when the recording is in progress it says what sample rate it is recording it.  If you are doing line in, you should already have selected that rate before the recording started.

Hope that helps!!

Ok Bean, the way I understand, the JB3 is getting the bit stream confused.  If it gets confused, it will record to 44.1k automatically, which sucks, because then your recording will sound either slow or fast (I think slow) and then you have to resample back to 48k, and that really sucks (and if you want to go to CD you have to resample AGAIN to 44k, which really really sux).

One thing I found when practicing with the optical out on my DVD player--make sure that your v3 is outputting a signal first--and THEN hit record on the JB3.  If the JB3 is recording with nothing from the v3, I think it's gonna screw you up.  Try it out.

Karl -- couldn't you just change the WAV header to 48k instead of actually resampling?  Then you'd just have your normal 48k > 44.1k resample for CD, anyway.  No double-SRC necessary, I think.

I guess you could do that, but the information has been recorded at 44.1k, and thus you've already lost the quality you hoped to have at 48k.

Resampling between 44.1 and 48 either way is not a clean one, even in the best of conditions.  Since I listen to almost all of my stuff on CD, I will (for the time being) always record at 44.1k.  It is hard to notice the difference between 44.1 and 48, but when resampling either way you lose out worse than just recording at 44.1 in the first place.

I think in this case the file header reads 44.1k, but the actual bits recorded are still 48k - I don't believe the JB3 actually *resamples* the incoming 48k to 44.1k.  Hence, changing the header would solve the problem without any need for resampling 44.1k > 48k.

Hey Bean - try changing the file header if this happens again and let us know your results?

Possibly, Brian, but I have my doubts--the only way to know for sure is to do a bits compare after changing the header back to 48k.

How do you change the header?  Maybe I'll run a test tonight, but I don't know how to just up and change a header.

Ok, I figured it out--Brian, what you said would work.  What happens, is this:

Scenario:
-JB3 has started recording at 44.1 kHz
-JB3 is being fed a signal of 48 kHz

At this point, the JB3 is still recording the 48k signal bit for bit.  If you watch the seconds timer on the JB3, and compare it against real time, they are clocking faster (about 9/10 of a second).

Bottom line:  if you accidentally record your 48k signal at 44.1k, you haven't lost quality and all that you have to do is reorient your wave file somehow (I'm not sure how to do that).  Your digital signal has suffered an identity crisis.

guyz, how often should i format, if any???

i plan on dumping everything onto the HD once i get home or whatever from wherever im at,so would cleanup (defrag), be good enuf or should i format too after i  fill it up a good bit???

im used to seeing my windows drive fragmented beyond belief, so im jst wondering how often ya'll do whatever it is you do in the reset menu, cause i do my homepc all the time ;)

but whats the diff between the cleanup and format, i know format wipes EVERYTHING,so does cleanup just cleanup up unneccessarry(sp?) stuff ???thats what i believed

what i want to know is, should i format before i leave for ANY show??

thanks,

i don't really know the answer to this, and maybe i do it way too often, but i noticed that when i have a freshly formatted nomad i have no problems with my recordings.  however, when i had mp3s, another recording, or even if i had went a long time without formatting i'd get misplaced samples in my recording.  sometimes it'd just be one or two, sometimes it'd be everywhere in the recording.  so now i do it before every time i go taping, just for peace of mind.

that link i posted doesn't say if it is glass or plastic. Do you know what they use in their optical cables? Also, it seem to me that glass would be much more fragile; is this true? I would rather use plastic if it can handle bumps better.

it seems so, i would feel safer going plastic too, but in a studio or home setting, id go glass

Are you talking about locking the player or pausing the recording? I dont know about pausing a recording but I never have any problems locking the player.

FWIW, I always get a big hiccup in the left channel at the beginning of every recording. Dont what the deal is but it never does it again.
