MDUA
« on: December 31, 2003, 12:38:35 PM »
Everyone:

Welcome to the first meeting of MD Users Anonymous.

My name is Chuck... and I still use MD.  <<Hi, Chuck>>

After trying a lot of different ways to record my band (and f-ing it up about every way possible), in February 2001 I bought an old MZ-R50 off a guy who wasn't using it anymore and picket up a Sony ECM-MS-907.

When I was cleaning out my closet, I found (yet another) box of MDs from the last few years, so I got them all together and organized them.  I have 130 MDs, including 70 discs of my old band Litmus, and 46 discs of Litmus rehearsals.

I thought I'd be finished with MD now that I have a much better rig, but it turns out that's not the case.  I still use my 907 > R50 for recording rehearsals (it goes in a walkman-sized bag and fits in my bass's gig bag pocket easily) and for recording gigs where there are a bunch of assholes and I don't want to risk my rig.

I know MD gets a lot of bashing here, and there's no doubt that it's not the fidelity of DAT or NJB3, but don't forget that it's great as what it's meant to be: a super-cheap, super-simple, super-reliable "better-than-cassette-and-almost-CD" recording system.

sorry, MD is not better than cassette - cassettes use no compression!

Certainly your D8 and my NJB3 are more accurate than my old R50.  My 002R 24/96 is more accurate than your D8.  The Digi HD192 is even more accurate.   Some mastering gurus will send that 192's output through analog and back to achieve a certain sound!

I won't argue with you -- beauty is in the ears of the beholder.

When I was going through my closet and found all those MDs, it just reminded me that if it wasn't for that cheap, almost-fool-proof recording setup, many shows would have been lost altogether.

I guess what I was trying to say with this thread is that though MD bashing is so popular, there's a time and place for it, and in that time and place it's really useful.

One could say the same about cassette tape, yes?  ;)

I can certainly agree with you Chuck - MD is very useful, and certainly has its place.  No doubt however, I would rather listen to my old Nak 550 masters than any mini-portable MD recording - could have something to do with the experience in making the tape as well.    :)       (And, no, the portability of the two rigs I just noted are not equal - the 550 is HUGE by todays standards, yet still considered a portable.)

It is very nice to have those old masters - cassette or MD!    Keep on recording - no matter the medium in use!  Sometimes convenience is the biggest factor in recording, such as what you described.

Ok, didn't mean to start shit...

Ok, maybe I did.   :P  What the hell else can I do when there's nothing to record right now???

I've got some Galactic on my calendar in Feburary, and it looks like YMSB and Particle are coming within range, but all that's still a month off.  Add to that the fact that my own band isn't playing 'till the 24th of January...  and you end up with me starting shit.

Seriously, didn't mean to offend.  Happy new years all!
