« on: January 17, 2004, 05:20:49 AM »
Hello Sound Devices
I would like a 722 without a preamp and in a shorter box so I can crotch it.
Thanx ;D

How do you want your box?

Grace preamps, Apogee A/D conversion (at 24 bit).... RCA inputs as well with adjustable channel delay (so you can run SBD+Mic mixes with no problems)... firewire, SPDIF, GOOD headphone amp, and internal batteries a la Oade preamps...

Oh, and good VU meters, too.

ditto, but if mics are on stage, there is no problem with the delay, a la edirol ua-5

How do you want your box?

I wrote to them and asked the same question last summer because I didn't see the need to pay for/carry/power an extra mic-pre and A/D when I plan to use a V3 front end.  The response was, "how are you going to monitor"?

So I thought about that and realized that I will want some way to listen to the show while still on the HD, and there is no way I'm buying an external D/A just for my car/hotel room.

Also, with the internal power, all you need is the 722 and mics to record a show when you can't get the full rig past security.

EDIT:  It looks like they finally posted the mechanical specs.  With battery and connectors it is about the same face dimensions as a V2 but not as deep.  So you can crotch it and get admiring stares instead of horrified shrieks.

If you run the 744, can't you just do the matrix channel delay in post production?
