Title: Creative® NOMAD® Jukebox Zen
Post by: Bri on October 14, 2002, 04:53:10 PM
From Slashdot..

Another iPod Competitor
Posted by timothy on Monday October 14, @03:45PM
from the looks-worthy dept.
rael9real writes "NOMAD has intoduced a new player. It has USB 2 and FireWire (finally), and supports WMA and MP3. It has a 20GB drive like the high-end iPod, and supposedly holds more music because it supports WMA (though why someone would want to use WMA is beyond me). It *is* cheaper than the iPod, though. Looks like a definite competitor. Maybe it'll drive iPod pricing down."

did'nt have time to read it.... what is WMA format? The great thing about these portable devices with firmware is that people find ways to hack them. Maybe if we can adapt SPDIF to USB (or even take a feed from the Apoggee) we have a portable flac recorder! I guess we'll have to start another hacking challenge! ;)

This is probaly my favorite example of making wone thing do another thing...

I'm pretty sure it is windows media something but that might not be all bad.  I remember reading something about windows media player 9 supproting lossless 24/192 audio with some format (I REALLY want to say .wma).  Anyway, I'm also pretty sure .wma in its current form is equivalent to .mp3 so...maybe someday.

it's amazing how they keep making the producks smaller and more "silver" but alway missing the mark with audiophiles. I really think they have a goal to see how many songs they can fit in your pocket rather than the quality of the recording. Arent we over the damn mp3 thing already?!!Who is impressed by that shit anyway anymore. They always miss their mark. Oh well, whadda ya gonna do.

It's Windows Media Audio.  Deffiantly better than MP3 for sure.  Here's a link for a report done by NSTL on the audio format.

thanks for the link, some decent info there but I think it's a bit dated.  I agree that WMA is better than mp3 but it's still way off for our purposes...

I don't, it appears that the MP3 is still strong and going.  A great number of people aren't that crazy about the quality, and most the time the "untrained" ear isn't going to notice the difference.  I guess it's easier for someone to dl 20 songs to there iPod to go jogging than it is to use that cd walkman.  We need frickin' DVD's in a portable format   ;)

I agree, I don't see mp3 going anywhere anytime soon because it is something that the general population has become very familar with.  Since companies (like creative) like to cater to the biggest audience, they'll be mp3 hardware coming out for at least a few more years.  my .02...

I dont mind mp3's for my portable use, cause when im on a plane and using my crap headphones who cares.  As for the recording field no mp3's in my backyard.

Once again, I agree.  I use mp3's all the time but they have no place in the field.

Very true, as long as there is a market, MP3's are here to stay.  You guys don't think that some MP3 hard drvie recorder is going to be the trend of the future?  But we'll be able to record more shows on one disc.   :o

Man it's tough to be the devils advocate on such a crappy format.
