Title: Tekkeon charge failure which was almost catastrophic
Post by: caymanreview on January 15, 2017, 02:39:14 AM
Ive never really babysat batteries while they charged, despite the warnings and advice I had received here over the years.

Christmas morning I was pulling last minute Santa duty wrapping and setting up for the morning. I was multitasking and had been charging all my batteries and getting everything straight to leave the next night on the 26th to head toward Phish NYE

I was only 20ft away when it happened, and very lucky that I was. I heard a small pop hiss hiss followed by a slower more steady hiss.

Looking up i saw the tekkeon had a cloud of gas shooting out of it, about the same time the smell hit me. It was horrible.

I quickly grabbed a pair of nitrile gloves from the cabinet next to the charge station and as safely as i could transferred the battery outside. I could feel the guts boiling and still charginf max or more until the ac cable was unplugged.

Dont leave charging batteries completely unattended. It could be all the difference in a normal day or the worst day of your life!

it happened at ~5am. im a night owl, but im always dead to the world by then.

all of our bedrooms are on the complete opposite side of the house too, by the time it woke me up it would have been a serious ordeal

in the end im stuck with my other 5 tekkeons, & even on a good day they make me nervous. I now feel the need to properly dispose of them all

I had this happen with a UPS at my home a few years ago. I carried it smoking outside.

I contacted the company and shipped it back to them for testing. They offered me a replacement and I declined. I now don't have any UPS in my home. I'd rather loose a computer than my home.

Is this one that outputs multiple voltages?

My Fremo/Scud USB batteries that I use with the DR-70D don't get remotely hot or even warm when charging.

Looks like we need to come up with some sort of DIY battery safe with a smoke alarm!

Glad you caught it - and thanks for the PSA!

Same thing happened to one of mine. Not sure when or what happened, I just noticed it blew up.

I've managed to get to the point with my rig where I don't need these batteries. I'll probably add one of those small USB batteries into the gear back soon though. I've never had a problem with those (I have a bunch of Anker USB batteries).
