ttkb: lcd tv pixelation
« on: August 08, 2008, 11:24:39 AM »
so I'm a noob to the world of lcd tv, hdtv, etc etc.  anyway we just bought a 37 LG a few weeks ago.  we have directtv HD hooked up via HDMI and a non converting dvd player hooked up via component.

from time to time (4 or 5 total) I have noticed pretty bad pixelation.   last night it was a big brown checkered spot.  it's been white and can't remember what else.  it's not a small spot either.  about 3 or 4 inches of the screen.  can't remember if it's happened on HD but it has on regular broadcast and on dvds playing xvid files.  I think it's happened more with the xvids on the dvd player.

a little research tells me it could simply be the signal form the dvd player/broadcast is not fast enough.  bad description I know but it was something to that effect.  I also have read about calibrating the set but I'm not paying $300 to do it.  I've tried a few settings I found online and may buy/dl a calibration dvd.

basically I want to know how common this is and if we should return the TV?  of course our first thought was to return it but reading a bit online it seems it may not be the TV at all.  but again the pixelation is pretty bad when it happens.

I have a Sharp LCD Tv with Directv.

Are you saying that watching TV etc the picture gets pixelated and stays that way or only for short bursts does it appear that way ?

I notice the pixelization when we get bad weather or high winds. Generally when the sat dish is moving in and out of alignment. The last time I spoke with someone at directv she said it only needs to move 1/10th of an inch for alignment issues. (The roof on our apt. is terrible. I have them come out every few months to fix it)

What is the response time of your LCD tv ? I picked my LCD tv specifically for its 4ms response time. The faster response time means less ghosting and artifacting  (I use it as my main PC Monitor for gaming as well as HDTV etc)

It could be any of these depending on the situation

I have an HD plasma set receiving Comcast cable HD and experienced bad pixilization on HD channels.

Installed a signal booster (as signal came into house) - (my) problem solved.

thanks for the replies.  since my original post we returned the tv for the same model (great reviews all around and the price was right).  my wife wanted to more than me. so we did....

anyway to answer some of kindms post

the pixelation is in very short burst.  it has happened a few times with the new set.  Response time: 5ms.

I also experience audio "farts"/freezes.  in researching it I found that the audio issues are a known issue with the specific hd dvr box.  so I'm pretty sure the pixelation issues are a result of the box or signal or both.

still doesn't answer why it happened on dvds playing xvids though?  I don't think it's happened with them on the new set but I'm not sure.  that could have been a bad component cable, bad disc read etc.  the dvd player has pretty much shit the bed.  it freezes on store bought dvds and doesn't like burned ones etc so it could be related to that.  I just got a OPPO to replace it!
