Recommendations for Simple/Cheap Balcony Mount for CA Cards

(1/2) > >>

Bullet1979:
I have been recording for several years and currently primarily using CA-14 Cardioids and DPA 4060's.  All the bands I have recorded up to this point only unofficially condone recording, so I've only ever recorded  >:D.  Now, I have a show coming up at the end of October that would be my first opportunity to record non- >:D so I'm wondering what the least-expensive method I could utilize to mount my CA-14's (they have alligator clips) and possibly also the 4060's simultaneously to a balcony.  The venue is Lincoln Hall in Chicago - for those who are unfamiliar with the layout, I believe the best location would be the center of the balcony facing the stage:

Any ideas for a poor man's setup would be greatly appreciated!

Tape em to the rail.  I like the blue painters tape for the more delicate size mics.

That will often work just fine, but it also leaves you at the mercy of the crowd, who may be hanging on, tapping, kicking, or otherwise sending vibrations down the rail to the mics.

I've been happy with this setup:

edit: photobucket sucks, but it's basically the following:

superclamp: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546371-REG/035_Super_Clamp_without_Stud
articulated arm that connects to superclamp: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/354218-REG/196AB-2_Articulated_Arm_2_Sections
adapter for your t-bar: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546490-REG/014-38_Rapid_Adapter_5_8_Stud_to_3_8
safety cable: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1020057-REG/Safety_Cable_18_

Then connect that to your shock mount & ruler, or whatever you're putting the mics on.

You could also get by even simpler with something like this https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/968689-REG/Atom_Clamp_With_1_4-3_8_Screw_Adapter & screwing your shockmount directly into it. I like the articulated arm because it gets the mics away from the balcony/crowd

When I mention shockmount, this is what I use. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KXQIY86/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Just make sure the connections match up, you may need an adapter - I can't recall the sizes of each.

Thanks for all of this, do you still have the pictures that have since been taken down by photobucket?  I'm having a hard time trying to assemble all of these pieces in my mind.  How far from the railing would the microphones end up being extended using those arms?  Also, where does this ruler come into play (sorry for the newb questions)?
