Best way to run cmc641s
« on: June 10, 2003, 04:44:58 PM »
just wondering what everyone's opinion on which config to run schoeps hypers or any hypers for that matter. I run my u89 in DIN, just trying to see what the sd mic users run them in.

I prefer DIN in general for hypers.  Haven't run the 41s yet, though.

I think the 641's are best run in your closet at home, while the u89 hypers are best run out in the field  ;)

I run the Gefell hypers XY when I am less than 30-50 feet from the source, DIN for most other times.  If it is a place that is obscenely boomy like the Millennium Center in Winston-Salem, I run XY even though I am far away from the stage.  Have no idea about the Schoeps; I have never run those.

Just give them a copy of that Truckers show I sent you.  That was a DIN recording in a bad poor sounding room.   I thought that turned out :smoking:.  I would think that xy would make the already bright 41s even more bright.  Maybe I'd run them XY if I had a pair of omnis to mix them with followed by a modified pcm f1. ;)

i actually now really like running both cards and hypers DIN.  cards spaced a little wider (20cm for cards v. 17 for hypers).  i think DIN cards creates a really nice stereo image and i like it better than ortf in a lot of situations.  ortf can be too wide unless you are close and dfc.  i think my weekend project is figuring out way to build an adjustable bar for neumann actives that keeps the caps at 90 degrees to each other but adjusts in spacing from NOS down to DINA and even less.

Once I get the 140's...I'm gonna try to get a DIN bar made.  It looks like it would be fairly easy....  I just need to see how the caps are clamped onto the XY and ORTF mounts.  I know someone who can build a nice aluminum frame at the 90 degree angle.

If you use the Neumann XY/ORTF mount for the KM140 actives - I forget the model number - it can be set up to run DIN, also.  I don't believe it was designed with it in mind, but it can be done.

Brian,
Would you just mount the caps backwards on the XY mount, or can you adjust the angles on the ORTF mount?

Would you just mount the caps backwards on the XY mount, or can you adjust the angles on the ORTF mount?

Unfortunately, just mounting the caps backwards in the XY mount doesn't get you enough spacing.  So, I played around a bit and here's what I came up with:

[1]  place the 1st XY bar mic-clip DOWN in the bar
[2]  place the ORTF bar mic-clips UP in the bar
[3]  place the 2nd XY bar mic-clip UP in the bar

The 2nd XY bar won't fit in the grooves of the mount base, allowing it to rotate freely when you loosen the screw cap.  This is good.

To run ORTF - just like normal.

To run XY - just like normal, only the 2nd XY mount isn't within the grooves of the mount base.  No big deal, it's plenty easy to line it up.

To run DIN - extend the 1st XY bar as far as it will go within the mount.  Mount the cap facing opposite how you would for XY.  Mount the other cap in the 2nd XY bar and rotate the bar until you have a 90º angle.  If I recall, the caps are practically dead-on spaced at 20cm.  Nice thing is, you can open or close the angle as necessary depending on room issues.

The only real issue, which was never a problem for me:  the mount base rotates through around 180º.  The mics set up in DIN are in a different plane than the mount base rotates.  What this means is that it's not easy to angle the mics up or down using the mount base itself.  I always just rotated the A20S shockmount if I wanted to angle the mics up or down.

Does this makes sense?  It's kinda confusing thinking about it without having the mount in front of me.  Lemme know...

I think I'll be able to deduce what you've explained once I get the mics and mounts here.  Thanks so much for the help.

I run the 41's DIN with my tubes and love the results. I also have the 5 caps that I will run DIN or ORTF(in card setting) if up close. I use the UMS20 bar, so switching configurations is quite easy. Thanks......Jason

I think the best way to run schempz is to run them over to another gear bag, and trade em in for some gefells!

scempz :glob:
haha, couldn't resist...HAPPY FRIDAY!!  That said, I always liked em in ortf or din!

I would ONLY run the 41's x/y if i was in a very poor sounding indoor room.  I would never run them x/y in a good sounding room or outdoors.....DIN rocks for those applications.
