i am going to try and carry on a " high-capacity, lightweight NiMH rechargeable battery pack" will there be any issues with this?

Shouldn't be an issue, don't sweat it.  Just allocate more time in your plans for the security check.

thanks! this is my first time flying with gear. a few people i talked to said its no problem carrying on a stand (standard size) but the archive thread made me nervous about getting packaging for it.

i like getting in early and stopping at the airport bar anyways  ;D

On my recent trip back east, security was far more interested in my electric toothbrush than in any of my taping equipment.
