CF prices and ultraII vs extremeIII.....?
« on: March 02, 2006, 11:24:34 PM »
For recording w a R-1 is there much difference between ultra 2 and extreme 3?  And where can I get the best price AND a vendor that's not sketchy?  Seems like the cheap vendors on pricegrabber.com are a bit shady.  Any comments?

I've used Pricegrabber for several purchases recently, including Flash.  I got a 4GB Sandisk Ultra II for $166 shipped from 6th Ave.  I just ordered it over the phone rather than internet.  When I'm dealing with a company I do not know, I ALWAYS call my order in so that I can ask a few questions.

What type of questions do you ask them?

Just basics...really, I just want to know that someone is on the other end of phone line that I know I have no previous knowledge of.  I s'pose anyone could pick up the phone, but a simple comment or two on the nice price and a "wow...how long have you guys been around" puts me at ease.  For inexpensive products, I have no qualms, but if I'm dropping 3 digits, I'd like to at least feel comfortable before getting jipped.

I read there's a problem using Sandisk Ultra II in the MT with the new firmware 1.3.3. Anyone used Sandisk extreme III with the new MT firmware?

well, one person has experienced problems with their 8 gig Ultra II card.  I transferred several DATs over the weekend (after I updated to 1.3.3), to my 4 gig Sandisk Ultra II, with no problems at all.  Granted, that was only 16 bit over S/PDIF, but the person with problems reported pops and clicks and noise even at 16 bit (and worse pops and clicks at 24 bit).  So, maybe there is a problem with the 8 gig card, but one person with a problem doesn't necessarily lead to a catergorical problem with the sandisk Ultra II cards.

I went looking at the differences too because I am getting ready to drop some coin on a hdp2.  What I found is the difference between the two cards appears to be packaging.  They both have the same read and write rates, atleast from what i read under the retailers description.  I think I might do a little more digging.......

nope I stand corrected the ultra 2's read and write 10mbsec while the extreme3's write at 20mbsec....
I know someone using the ultra 2's with his hdp2 at 24/96 without issue.

I just got my SanDisk 4 gig from 6th Ave. yesterday.  Still no charge on the card...weird.
