Unknown mod for my AD20. Any help?
« on: October 18, 2005, 07:07:27 AM »
Hi there,

I recently bought an AD20 from gloco in the Yard (+t again to him for the perfect transaction!), and when the unit arrived to me noticed there is not a standard one.

First of all, it does have some gorgeous knobs which are much better than the original ones:

In the other side, it does have an additional mini xlr 3 pin plug.

I asked George about this and he doesn't know what's exactly this.
Any ideas about what could be this used for? If it was an input for mini xlr plugs, should this have to be 2 inputs (for full stereo sound?)  ??? ???

while I'm not really sure, I'll take a guess, and at least throw out another possibilty.  When I had my AD-20, I had it modded with a third digital output.  I had a regular RCA jack installed on the opposite side of the controls (where your mini-XLR jack is), so I could just plug in a regular S/PDIF cable without an adapter.

Perhaps your mini-XLR is an additional S/PDIF output or even an AES output.  if you have a cable, it shouldn't be too hard to test that theory.  just connect it to a recording device with a digital input and see if it records :)

yes... this is a core-sound digital output mod.  Mine came with a min-xlr to sony 7pin cable.

interesting... already thought about that but as I don't have a mini xlr cable couldn't test.
So if this is a core mod for optical out, an since I'm only using this with my JB3, I would consider the mod useless for me right?

getting back to the AD20 - does it still have an optical out?  or is this the only output on the unit?  if this is the only digital output couldn't you run the signal into a hosa box and convert it to optical and then use it with the jb3?

Because nothing says "I have lots of money and am sort of confused as to how to spend it" like Bose.

It is the standard unit PLUS the extra optical out.
So I can run it straight to the JB3 with a optical toslink
