Title: Shure locking windscreen for AT853?
Post by: ArchivalAudio on August 29, 2013, 03:21:45 AM
Alright I just spend waaaaay too much time searching for info I know I commented on at some point to find the info later and my searches didn't help.

I know there are some shure locking foam windscreens that fit the AT853 mics.
Can someone please share what model they are

will the Shure RK412WS  fit?

or is another...
please lead me in the correct direction.
thanx bunches!

what I use for my AT853 are some AT8109's ... they were made for the AT943 but I removed the PVC inside and now they fit over the bigger AT853 capsules :))
just a hint, ...

Thanks

I think those might be them, also at sweetwater and else where:
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/RK183WS (http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/RK183WS)

Thing is the specs on shures don't cite any dimensions on any of their mic spec pdfs. the AT853  show
Quote
1.39" (35.2 mm) long,
0.47" (12.0 mm) diameter
on the SP site it shows inner height .9" and inner width .6"  seems like these are too wide?

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/RK412WS/ (http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/RK412WS/)
Seem to be smaller and might be the correct size, but are they the correct fit? Again no cap demensions on shure mic specs...

can anyone else confirm or deny either ?

thanks again

I'd like some locking ones too, but wasn't sure myself. I ended up getting WindTech 512's.

I use these as well.  They are tight fitting but do the job well.  Just be cautious when removing them.  I managed to break one of my four already.

Received my 4-pack of
Shure RK183WS  and can confirm that they it!  Yes they are a tight fit and  are a bit of a challenge to get back off.

If one were running open outside you would likely want some dead rats over the screens but for   >:D they would likely be fine the way they are!

thanks to all for giving me the tip (s) !

Would I lie about using them?  ;)

And indeed, the screens aren't enough on their own.  I used the subcards back in June with the screens only and got hit with some wind noise on a recording.  The deat rats/muppets fix that very nicely.   And yes, if you want to change the caps, you have to do so very carefully.  By yanking on them, I managed to break one windscreen already.

Adrian never wanted to imply that you'd lie...
These things are much smaller than the orignal windscreens that come with the AT853's, however the locking plastic basket seems that it might hold the screens slightly away from the cap, which is good.

from your tip I found that twisting them off in a clockwise motion as to not unscrew the caps seems to make it "almost" easy...

thanks again for the tips!!!!

Ian, I never implied that.  ;)

I do like that they're smaller, although, I find they're not as good for wind protection but if I need something smaller, I can always run these in a hat.  The clockwise motion thing works REALLY well and that's how I've learned to get them off the caps.

BTW, thanks for the pointers on the AKG caps -- they're serving me well in my active setup.  I almost find that I'm not using the 853's at all now. I just need to find a pair of CK63's (I've used a buddy's when running open they've saved my bacon when shows haven't been as loud or they've been chatty).

Ah yes all is good!

Again Thank you!

I am excited to have some AT 853's back in my life... missing my sub card caps....

need to find some dead rats or not
in my   >:D rig I may not even need the rats. I think I'll only use these   >:D
or may be when I am traveling for  a rig to run  when needed.

PS glad the CK61's are treating you well, happy to recommend Ron from Full Comppass

I notice that the AT8109's are "two-stage". I ran a pair of regular foam ones I picked up at Sam Ash yesterday and got  a lot of wind noise. Wonder if these would be as good as running the dead rats?

My subcards are generally what I'll run on the 853's (even if I'm right at the board).  There's something about the sound that just kicks ass.  I'll use the omnis if I'm up close, though.  If I'm gonna run the cards, my AKG's are coming out.  :P

Contact TBrown4 for some Dead Muppets.  The ones he did for my old CA-14's fit great, the ones he did for the Shure windscreens worked well and the DPA U0896 one's I got second-hand fit like a glove.  Even if I'm running them in the hat, there can be enough of a breeze to add some noise on the 853's.   Worth the investment and have saved my bacon.

And yes, Ron's a great guy.  Easy transaction and he shipped them to a thrid-party forwarder for em (a lot of places WILL NOT do this).  My Shure and DPA windscreens came from FC as well.

I hate to take this thread off subject, but since you brought it up...  8)

I also love the subcard caps. What patterns do you like to run with them? I recently ran them NOS FOB here:

http://archive.org/details/del2013-07-26.flac16

and even though the music doesn't have much going on stereo-wise, the 'being there' factor is high with the crowd noise.

I recorded the same band XY using the Oade recommended wide angle for outdoors and didn't like the results. However, I was WAY back from the PA and the sound was pretty poor:

Sounds good!!! I'm desperately looking for a single subcard (I have 1 already), and to get back ON topic ( ;)), I'll be buying some Shure locking windscreens once I do (actually before), four to a pack, so I can put them to use!!!

I ran them DIN on a stand at the board most recently (when open) but usually run them A-B inside a hat.   Either way, I've gotten good results; if your PA "sounds" distant from where you are, you're gonna get pooched on the pull regardless.  If the mix is awful, your capture will _usually_ be the same.  Hell, I also run CK61 actives and if the mix is poor or my location is "too close" or "too far off axis" my capture suffers.

Hey guys... I bought a pair of At853's from darktrain over the winter and Friday will be my first outdoor show on a mic stand. I bought the 4pk of Shure RK183WS's (and they fit perfectly), but I was curious what the "dead rat" method is? Can someone explain that to me so I can get the best pull possible? Thanks.

* edit -- just found this, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dead-Rat-Style-Windscreen-Covers-Black-Lime-Purple-Fuchsia-/140703797588
so when he wants measurements, can i just tell him i have the Shure RK183WS? dont think ill have them in time, but it will be nice to have them for the next show.
