Where to get 7.2v Tamiya-style NiMh batteries & charger?
« on: June 05, 2007, 11:09:47 PM »
Anyone use these?
The only ones I've been able to find at reasonable prices are on Ebay.

Like these:

I need to get one or two along with a way of charging them.

Anyone have suggestions or experience with these?

thanks,
/james

I've bought several batteries from http://www.batteryspace.com

this is their selection of 7.2V NiMH battery packs:
http://www.batteryspace.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=703

I've found their prices to be reasonable, and some of the battery packs come bundled with a charger.  if you choose a pack that doesn't come bundled with a charger, you can buy a charger from them as well.

I've actually purchased from that ebay vendor you link.  I had no problems and they shipped quickly.  They have a regular website as well but I found the ebay prices to be a bit cheaper even after shipping was added/  They do have some 7.2 batteries plus charge combos.

I've also purchased from Jason's link.  Also good service.  I'd go with whomever was less expensive.

I actually don't have a 7.2V battery just yet.  I have a 12V NiMH pack that I bought from batteryspace.com that I use to power my HD-P2.  but I have been thinking of picking up a 7.2V NiMH to replace the lead-acid battery that I currently use to power my V3.

I don't have a 7.2v either but bought a 9.6v with the Smart Charger for use with the UA5.  To figure out approximate runtime, you'd need to divide the capacity of the battery by whatever your device draws for power.  UA5 draws about 500mah with phantom on and I have 3300mah batteries.  3300 divided by 500= ±6.5 hours.

I use and own 12 x 7.2v NIMH RC batteries I scored from ebay in packs of 3. I think I paid about 50 shipped for 3 at a time. I use a smart charger 'chun' charger. they are the blue ones you see everywhere and still charge relatively quickly. the weight is more than LiOn but LiOn is WAY too unreliable sometimes IMO.

One note, I had to cycle my batteries about 6-7 times a piece to get them to max capacity. sounds like a PITA, but a surefire way to guarantee your batteries will last alot longer. I also cycle once a year at least as well now. Ive had mine since 2005 I believe and so far they have worked great. Its nice to be able to power the V2 or the 722 with them since I have cables that allow me to do both :)

I just bought a couple of the 4200mAh & charger from batteryspace.

They were about the same price as the Ebay vendor and are located about 5 miles from where I live...so shipping is quick and cheap.  Also picked up some AA & AAA rechargeables for just over $1/each.

Just need to get my Busman modded FR-2LE back now to use the batts with...

I'm really happy with it so far.  Run times have been more than adequate for what I do (8-10 hours/charge), and the batts & charger seem to be well made.  They are perfect in the FR-2LE.  The powering options are fantastic w/this Fostex box.
