Only thing I can think of is the clips are used for grounding. Perhaps the connector is only two wire or it's for a ground lift if desired but I can't think of a situation where it would be needed.

The clip is on the cable, not the microphone. Is this another way of grounding a cable to make it balanced?

That was the first thing I thought had too, what about sub-harmonic transference.
