Powering Canon Vixia HMF31 video cam - off the grid
« on: December 10, 2015, 10:54:22 PM »
Been pokin' around, not found much I can use. Hope this question hasn't been answered before. Run cam where I hace access to AC power, no problem. Need to do some shows with no access. Battery only last an hour. The input for DC is stated as 8.4v, 1.5 amp. What's the smallest, cheapest, answer to my problem? I have no qualms about rigging a cable, just need some advice about the unit. Thanks in advance

Obaaron, I haven't found it yet, but I'll post it when I figure it out. I did see some of the generics that were mentioned. I still haven't decided to grab a couple of batteries for the camera or try to come up with an external pack that would plug into the "DC in" receptical. I'll be doing some stuff this summer that will require 10-12 hrs and I would really like to have a "plug and forget" solution. Pain enough trying to change out SD cards.

Thanks. I still think I'd rather have an external battery pack or what-not. I just wonder if one of the DVD batteries in the yard sale would run it

Im sure you can make an external work but if the cord gets jossled an loses connection youll have no files.

Well, I would leave the standard battery on there as a backup........it takes over seemlessly if you lose the 9v (or 8.4v or whatever it is). Been running it on AC>factory converer, just getting tired of hauling a 50' extention cord into the place. If I got to carry something with some heft, would rather not have to string it along the ground from the SBD:)

Speaking of which, I've taped a ton of crap this past summer and haven't really done anything with it. What do people use to convert these avchd files to something more DVD friendly?

Cyberlink Powerdirector 13 is $20 plus $2.99 shipping with a $20 rebate at Newegg right now. Hard to beat that deal.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832117109&cm_re=cyberlink-_-32-117-109-_-Product

From what I see on line, the HF 31 uses a BP-808 battery pack of 890 mah/ 7.4 v, and the power supply is 8.4v at 2.0a.  I have a different model Canon that actually has the DC voltage shown by the input.  I would look at your input to see what voltage it shows.  Aren't radio control batteries 7.4v?  You'd want to be sure you have the right polarity if this voltage would actually work with your camera.
