Not busting your bubble, but why not just buy an M10 or something like that, and just stock up on batteries[rechargeable] of course ;)

I've made a few homebrew cables, no need to take the iriver apart.  It's just computer USB -> iRiver charger jack.  I leave my AC charger at home, use this cable to charge at work, in car, etc.

- Find a generic USB cable for computer, cut it in half.  Keep the computer end, toss the camera/printer end.
- Find a cable with the right tip to fit into the iRiver.  Cut that in half, save the tip, toss the rest.

In the USB cable there are 4 wires.  The outer two are 5 volts, generally red/black with red=+ and black =-  The other 2 are data lines, just forget about them.  Carefully connect the 2 cables, solder it together so it's 5V to the tip with + on the inside, - on the outside.  Double and triple check the polarity before you plug it into your iRiver.

Yep. I can't find either of my iriver chargers so I use a USB>iriver jack cable to charge my mp3 player at work.

Tapin...the iRiver I got from you runs on one of these....a trip to teh Shack and a hot Iron is all you need....

Quote
Build 5v battery pack

A couple people have had success building ~5v battery packs out of 4 x 1.2v NiMH cells.  Fully charged NiMH cells will put out ~1.4v each, so this pack will deliver around 5.6v fully charged - which is a bit too high for the iriver, outside it's operating voltage specs.  If you run it with a slightly too high voltage, you may lock up the iriver which will require resetting it by pressing the reset button on the bottom with a paper clip or toothpick.  If the voltage is a little high, run the batts for a few minutes on another device (e.g. small light bulb) to drain the battery which will reduce the output voltage enough to fall within the iriver's voltage specs.  There’s a thread about it here: http://www.misticriver.net/showthread.php?t=4937

usually on iriver you can switch charge via usb on or off in the menu. (mine is rockboxed, dunno if its also availiable in stock firmware)
