Any m148>AD1K users out there?
« on: January 07, 2004, 12:24:42 PM »
For some reason I'm not getting enough gain when running 4022>148>ad1k. The b&k's usually require a lot of juice but it should'nt be this bad.  At the xmas jam, I had the apogee set to +4 and the levels were very low. Then I set it to -10 which helped a little, but the ad1k was maxed and the levels still were not where they were supposed to be. Is there some sort of input sensitivity/low-high gain calibration for the ad1k? Has anyone ever ran, preamp>AD1000 (mic in)?

Set the apogee to -10 and go to about 3/4 gain on the apogee...then turn those recessed calibration pots w/ a screwdriver until you get the levels you need.  The 148 is a 20db box, you shouldn't have a hard time getting the levels you need w/ the ad1000.  I wouldn't go mic in on the 1k...unless absolutely necessary

Thanks, Mitch! So should I always run it at -10, even after the pots are set?

didn't run 4022>m148, but did run 4022>eaa, which is roughly 20db of gain, when set at zero, with -35 mic sens. At times, running from a distance, I did have to crank the knobs, even at -10, and sometimes for acoustic music, even WAY fob, had to max them out to get decent levels. So I think it is the 4022's, to some degree. I *believe* you could get more using the screwpots, if you change the settings with the dip switches, but then you'd be as fucked as I am with the screwdriver. And I'm not sure you could even squeeze more gain running that way. After a few shows, I discovered I might as well always run -10.

I'm pretty sure after I adjust the cal pots I can go back to using only the knobs. I just realized the ad1k I have was calibrated too low. For some reason I thought the gain knobs and cal pots were the exact same thing (they're not). I should be good to go now.

I think the pots and knobs are independent, one or the other, changed by flipping that cal/knob dipswitch. So ramping up the pots, but then switching to knob control won't do anything for your levels. Really did get low levels sometimes with the knobs, I remember maxing out the ad1k from the TS last year for The Dread, and still only getting -3 levels.

Hmm. I thought that's how it worked. I talked to Gary from Apogee  acoulpe days ago and he told me it would work. He did'nt sound too sure, though. The guy who sold me the b+k's used to run 4022>m148>ad1000. I'll ask him what's up.

yeah, surprisingly, gary didn't know a few things I asked him about. Not 100% on this, but fairly sure that the pots vs. knobs are exclusive. ought to sound great, very happy with 4022>m148>mme, other than the, umm...ergonomic issues.  ;D
