Anyone running a V3 with 480's?
« on: September 20, 2003, 05:19:18 PM »
I would like to hear some opinions. I have 480's and 184's and was wondering which "all in one box" (Edited) would be better for both sets of mics? I know the V3 would be better for the 184's because of their color, but I'm afraid it may be too bright of a combo with 480's.....
I'm not reall impressed with the 184's>MMe. How do you feel about this?

I am definitely of the opinion that there is no end all box. Scott Brown will disagree  :D

I think the minime and the v3 both have obvious strengths and weaknesses.

as an all in one box I'd give the nod to the v3... but for overall sound I (and several others) prefer v2(craig davis prefers the sonosax)->minime.

No need to flame me dude. There is definetly a different sound using those 184's then using the 480's. To my ears the 480's tend to sound more like the music did when I was at the actual show hearing it.  Maybe you ought to try a set comparison running two different mics? To me colored means the mic does or does not perfectly represent what you heard at the concert.  Doesn't mean I'm right doesn't mean I'm wrong. But I am glad you are intrigued.

I really am set on an all in one box. So I'm mainly looking for opinions on the two boxes (via MMe and V3)

if you're set on an all in one I'd get a V3.

p.s. Mike's not flaming you at all...

Mike's hearing has started to go in his old age so he doesn't need any of the acoustic help the minime provides, he's got it naturally  ;)

I record almost exclusively in quality acoustical environments and acoustic music. I chose my equip't based on purity of signal.

and I still do a lot of my recording in old vaudeville theatres and movie houses, and clubs as well as from the backs of arenas and ampitheatres... I don't really want to capture all that is available to me in those instances  :)

Mike I can never tell from your posts whether you are being rude or just witty. My bad, it's hard to tell when I don't know you from Adam.
I don't want to get off track here. We could go on for days about the boxes on their own merits. It's the 480>V3 config I'm curious about. Anyone running this?

ask bean, he's ran his 480's into a V3 at mid-x, and we've had plenty of discussions on v3 v. minime, im not sure you gonna get a big debate here as we've had heated discussions in the past, so check the archives and search and im sure many threads will come up debating this topic.

Carl Beck runs 4022>v3 and 481>v3 and likes both. Similar mics, both very flat, imo the dpas have a full midrange, and the akgs do not. But both flat. You will hear what your mics hear >v3. If your mic has a shortcoming, you will hear it. If your mic is colored in a manner you enjoy, you'll hear it. The mme will make most mics sound very alike, imo. You will miss lots of detail, but if the warm, fat sound pleases you, that's the box for you. I do like >v2>mme, but find it a little dry for my tastes. Marc.

Marc,

What exactly makes a recording sound "dry" to your ears?

dry = the sound of drums and bass through an oade m148. Like thumping dust.  8)

The best tape that I've ever heard came from a 480>V3 combo.  It's a nickel creek show and I can upload it to you if you'd like.  PM me if you want it.

The 480>V3 combo is what I'd eventually like to get, but with my budget it will be a while. ;)

i've heard many nice 480 > v3 tapes but i personally prefer the mme sound (i think i'm in the minority on this one).  i've only ran my new rig a couple times but i've been extremely happy the 140 > mme combo.  the mme vs. v3 debate is very subjective but i think that when it comes down to it both boxes sound great and you'll be happy w/ either one (probably for different reasons).  just my .02
