Title: Final thoughts on UA-5
Post by: blu666z on April 21, 2003, 06:08:49 PM
Anybody have any last minute suggestions before I get the UA-5?  Called Oade today and have pretty much decided to get it and a battery pack from them.  Charger, battery, and plug go for $140.  Seems like a good deal for $700ish for mods and all.

I dont have one personally, but through friends that have/had them, and listening to tapes made with it.....it is a nice unit, definitely at that price point.

I would save my money and make a battery pack, but otherwise you should be cool!

Have fun

You don't have to know how to solder to make the battery pack.  Everything, at least using the rc battery pack, is either twisted os connected with crimp connectors.  I don't have the link off hand, but I am sure someone does.

I think it was http://www.jordanshapiro.net/ua5 or something like that

Here's the link:

It - and lots of other info - is also in the Archival Information section, Power and Related thread.

Might expand on that a little and get a Otterbox for it.

As bean pointed out, I run a wmod UA5.  I:D   love that thing, especially since I've started recording 24 bit.  Did you buy the pmod or wmod?

The wmod is supposed to much improve soundstaging, and I can attest that it's HUGE at 24/96.  If the info's there, it extends well past my wall in depth, and outside the speakers.  I think 24/96 really accentuates the good of the UA5 A/D, too...  I was pleased with it at 16/44, but the A/D would really rather run at 24 bits; 16 is good, but a little congested at times.

Regardless, I'm shocked at the sound quality of this little beast.  $500 is chump change for something this good...  The only thing I miss about not running an apogee or V3 is the build quality isn't quite up to snuff, and there aren't any meters.  But I can run 24/96 over USB, so I guess there's tradeoffs there  :P

this maybe a stupid question but i'm gonna ask anyways b/c i've been wondering for awhile.  how do you know where your levels are if there aren't any meters?  i'm used to running my mp-2 and it has nice meters...so i'm a confused on how to know if you're running your ua-5 to hot?

thanks,
justin

Actually, since this got brought up somehow...is there a device that would take a digital or line signal, and display meters accurately.  I hate having to read meters on a dat deck and always wondered if something external existed?

Daryan, that device *has* to exist somewhere in the pro audio world.  Just not sure if it'll be DC powered :)  IMO I wouldn't want another signal device in the chain, as I feel every device/cable you add can potentially degrade the signal.  I like short and sweet.

As zhianosatch pointed out, I watch levels on my recording device; be it NJB3 or laptop.  I prefer the laptop, as it has HUGE level meters, with -db readings, peak hold feature, and is quite accurate.  I glance at the screen after every few songs to check the peaks, very convienient.
