Jb3 External Power Q (yes another one)
« on: March 30, 2004, 06:50:49 PM »
Not sure if this was covered in the below thread but if I were to use the 12V does it have to be 7ah or can I use a higher like 10ah. Also, with the "car adpator" and the 4 pin shuold I still put a fuse in? Just trying to plan for the festivals. Thanks guys.

The AH rating of the battery determines how long your battery will last - the higher the AH rating, the longer it'll last.  So you should be fine with either 7AH or 10AH.

If it were me, I'd still put a fuse in (unless the car adapter has one built in).

Hmm, fuse?
I haven't built mine yet but I am thinking whether I should use a fuse or not.   I was just wondering what exactly is a fuse protecting against when you are hooking it up to battery?   I always like to be on the safe side so if there is the possibility of something going wrong I'd probably want to insall one then.

I can see my car adapter I just bought has a fuse mounted in the car lighter plug part and I can see how there can be unexpected surges it is protecting against(like when starting the car which is not recommended to have plugged in when doing anyways).   But I was planning to snip that off since they are 2 seperate units and didn't need the car lighter piece.

I think in this case, the fuse is to protect the CAR WIRING more then the JB3 - from shorts and overcurrents.  If your JB3 flipped out and developed a short, you'd pop THAT fuse instead of the one in your car, or worse yet, fry wires in your in your cars wiring harness.

A battery will likely NEVER send out more current than is called for by the device on the other end, a fuse WILL however protect that BATTERY in the event or a short in the JB3 or adapter wiring.

In short, if you got room in your hack/DIY mods to put one in, it certainly can't hurt, but it protects the power source & not necessarily the JB3.

If you DO choose to include a fuse, make SURE you carry an extra one with your rig.  Nothing like blowing one and not having a spare with you.

the Ghost is actually pretty hot!
the narration comes at the end of Bathtub(smokin!) over the jam...Trey starts off talking about how its the first show in the US, leading a cheese "USA USA" chant, then talks about the first 4 songs of the show which were the US debuts of the new songs that debuted in Europe...blah, blah, blah...say they have 1 more song then they'll take a break, then he mentions the worm.
Wolfmans> Magilla, Birdland jam> Bowie in set 2 is prety good as well.

ahhh...I can talk Phish with anyone.
someone has got to help balance out this pro WSP stand around here ;D
sorry for the thread highjack. +T's to all   :)

well, that depends where you keep your JB3 and UA-5...I had a short occur on my 9.6v 3000mAh battery while it was in the bag.  The thing got hot enough to melt some electrical tape before the fuse blew.  These batteries we're all using store a fair bit of energy!

Had a regular square 9V short out with the clip/connector jammed between the two contacts.  Melted the connector.

Theoretically, these things could explode or start a fire (or melt the case of an SLA).  How'd ya like to be standing in the taper line, and have some wook tell ya your backpack is smoldering (or you have a trail of battery acid dripping down your back)?  Most of the commercial (read: Eco-Charge) are internally fused.  The DIY stuff isn't, unless you put one there.

Not to scare anyone, but all it takes is one accident.  Consider fusing your power rigs, or at least protect the connections when it's "in the bag".
