help with my laptop!
« on: April 24, 2003, 04:17:17 PM »
ok, heres the deal, my laptop has been on the fritz lately and i have no idea how to fix it.  i am by no means a computer whiz, but i do know some things.  just wondering if anyone can help me figure out the problem.

so, this is what has been happening lately:

the computer will just freeze at random times (this has been happening often!).  i dont know if it is because im using windows ME (which i have heard sucks) or if it is some kind of glitch in the computer.

any suggestions?  do i need to defrag my computer?  if so, how do i do this?

heres what im running,  toshiba laptop(satellite), its got a 20 gig hd with about 8 gigs free.  running windows ME, 127 mb ram, pentim 3 processor.

thanks for any and all help!

To defreagment the computer...programs->accessories->system tools...at least that is what I remember from ME.  Try that first, but chances are that is not why the computer freezes.  When you say freezing, do you mean it just stops responding, or does it actually crash, as in the computer shuts off?  Both of these conditions could be caused by different things.  Here is what I would do:  First, update all of your drivers, bios etc.  This will most likely fix your problem.  If this doesn't work, try isolating which driver is causing the crash/freeze.  I can help with this further once you get to this step, just let me know.  So, in summary, update the drivers, defrag the drive, and then if it is still crashing, let me know and I will make a bunch more suggestions...having an HP computer, I know all kinds of remedies for crasges ;) ;)

*Totally random* freezes on that laptop I'd attribute to the OS. Me is unstable. You heard right, it does suck. ;D
Defragging might help (it can't hurt) and it's worth a try.

In my experience, pc "freezing up" issues are usually RAM related. But I agree, ME sucks and you should consider upgrading. Your P3 with 128mb should work with XP.
