Title: mma6000 THAT much better than SP-SPSB-1?
Post by: Aaron41 on February 07, 2006, 05:24:47 PM
Hey everyone,

It looks like I'm picking up a pair of DPA 4060s or 4061s for both open and stealth taping. I've already got an SP-SPSB-1 which has worked pretty well. To still use that all I would need is a 1/8 jack on the end of the mics.

I see a lot of people are using the mma6000 to power the mics. Is there any special reason for this beyond not having to get the 1/8 jack installed on the mics? Is the sound THAT much better?

Any advice is welcome. Thanks!

clean gain from 0 => 37dB, and hpf.
as transparent as you'd expect from dpa.

Is it $500 more worth it though? I'm on a college budget. :)

I can't speak to "worth it". It is to me.

I can say that the one time that I did run a similar combo, 406x 1/8" => sp box (schwilly's), was at a reggae concert where the sound level was strictly monitored by the spl nazi's. The recording was going line in to a wide-open D100/M1(?) and was dreadfully low, with max'd peaks hitting -15dB or so.

I did notice really, really low levels when I ran 4061s into my SP during the Moe show recently. I had to put +8 gain on it to get it anywhere near where I wanted to be.

I echo what Mr. French said..It was to me. Ive run the SP stuff too, and it doesnt compare at all..not even the same ballpark..the 4061/mma are a match made in heaven...I promise....

aaron, why not hold off for a while and run my mma6000 and hear for yourself?  Moke's right though, you gotta have the microdots to run them from the mma6000.

oh, and even though I've ran both setups, I changed my whole rig when I got the mma6000, so I can't really determine which peice of gear made which improvements.

SHAMELESS PLUG HERE:  I am selling a MPS6010 for $65 SHIPPED which is a DPA batt box....no need to hack off your micordots to get a workable solution for your DPA 4061s, you can save your money for a MMA6000 and then ditch this box.  I think the box has got better components than the SP box (Rubycon Caps), it outputs XLR so you could run it into a V3, sax, aerco...you name it!

Hmm... I do like that shameless plug. :)

Does the MPS6010 go right into the JB3 or will I need separate components?

It'll go, you just need adapters to get from the XLR outputs to a 1/8 plug.
