Hi all. This is a cool illumination of the difference that positioning can make-

Here's the venue's seating chart:
https://www.oldtownschool.org/images/concerts/Regular_Seating.jpg

The speaker is suspended above the "D" table in front of the stage. It projects sound both downwards towards C7 and across towards the balcony at G8.

Night 1: Balcony, seated in G4. This one clearly sounds the best. https://archive.org/details/tmg2018-05-27

This seating chart actually isn't perfect- for these shows, they removed the tables, and had 3 extra rows of seats in front of the stage. I'll give approximate positioning.

Night 2: The "C" table in front of the stage (Near the back of the table, furthest from the stage, on the right side of the table) https://archive.org/details/tmg2018-05-28

Night 3: The "O" table in front of the stage. (closer to just a bit below A15 in actuality) https://archive.org/details/tmg2018-05-29

All the shows sound good, but the one from the balcony is -clearly- best.

I clipped the mics in the same spot each night- near my collar bone between my shoulders and my shirt collar.

Hope people get some use out of this somehow :o or at least find it interesting!

Thanks - I am going to check them out.

I may be easy to please, but I think the Old Town School has one of the best sound systems in any small theater I have been in -- I've sat in the balcony (many times) and at the table right next to the soundboard (a couple of times) and oddly enough I think the balcony gets better sound than anything closer to the stage.

Interesting comparison. They all sound good. I kind of like night two's recording...

Thanks for sharing, nice recordings, agreed on the first one sounding best, better L/R balance I'd say.

Pretty Cool, thanks for sharing. Nice quiet attentive audience. I enjoy experimenting in a similar fashion, recently tried by CA-11 Omnis and CA-14 Cards from the same spot for 2 different sets.

I enjoyed your setlist too, haven't seen that detail provided before. I am amazed you don't need to go the bathroom and can sit in one spot for that long!

Good stuff man.

Oooo this is EXTREMELY relevant to my interests, thank you so much for sharing. I'm about to pick up some CA-11s and this post has me more excited about my decision- I really love the sound of the 11s in comparison, here. I realize it's not apples to apples given card vs omni, but it still helps.

As far as cutting up the shows goes- yeah, I'm really into the band, and ran into the situation where I'd like to use the recordings for things like snowboarding but would have tracks that had like a minute or so of talking leading up to the music. So I cut 'em up so people can have the choice of taking those out or not for playlists :)

I actually purposefully drink less leading up to shows so I can get in the best position possible / not have to leave when I'm recording hahaha. These were a special case since it was a reserved/seated venue- it's more relevant when ya have to line up, but yeah.

Thanks again for sharing!!

Thanks for sharing this, "love2tape"!

I do the same thing - Study the seat charts, get around the room a lot to scope out where the really sweet spots are. I'm doing this at a club in Seattle called The Jazz Alley. I'm wandering all over that joint during performances. They probably wonder what the hell is wrong with me!  ;D
From what I've learned, I know exactly which tables to go for now as soon as shows are announced...\\

Thanks Again. Nice work!
