Advice for a new taper
« on: May 13, 2007, 06:33:31 PM »
hey guys. I recently got tickets for Rock the Bells, featuring Rage Against the Machine, and this has inspired me to get into taping.

I am on a really low budget, and I need some suggestions for some gear. I was looking into getting minidisc recorder off of eBay and some Core Sound low-cost mics.

Does this sound good for a beginner, and what MD recorder would you suggest?

thanx

That was one of my first rigs. You can make good recordings with it. Obviously not spectacular recordings, but still good.

I would suggest reading the Where To Begin section of this website.

Someone selling low end core sound mics in the Yard Sale here.

But I'd check out Church Audio in the retail section 1st.

Remember number 2: empty that bladder!  Do not drink caffeine while at the gig.  It is a diuretic.  It makes you piss.

Both of the above comments assume you're stealthing, which of course, if you go with something like a Core Sound mic and MD recorder, you'd probably be doing.

Regarding MD, I'd recommend lossless recording and go with a hi-md player/recorder.  I may sound like a used-car salesman with that recommendation since I have one for sale for cheap, but they are a low-cost entry level recorder and you can get high-quality lossless recordings from a hi-md recorder that fits just fine into any pocket since the MD player is so small.

BTW, the standard warning here is that if you have any fears of getting into this hobby BIG TIME, don't even start, because you're at the same point as 100% of the rest of us were at some point...looking to get into this hobby for relatively low stash.  Course, as we can all attest, it ain't long before you get bit by the bug and end up spending all of your life savings on tickets and taping gear and spending lots of time worrying about getting fired because you're reading TS.com when you should be working.

For me, it's "I'm really tired and don't want to go out tonight, but what if I miss a great set?" or "It might rain, but I can either fit my umbrella in my bag or some more cables..."  :D ???

Battery box will improve mic performance but you can record w/o it. Again check out church audio and he can set you up w/ a great deal. Oh shit my boss is coming late.

My advice to you is to turn back now before it is too late!   LOL  You're gonna have lots of fun but it seems to become an obsession pretty quickly.  Or maybe it is just that obsessive types are attracted to the hobby.

The older MD units record in compressed format which means some loss of quality.  A great learning platform: small, cheap and pretty reliable.  I still have an old one and a new on, too: MZ-RH1 which records in an uncompressed format: PCM.

Have a good ride.   8)

you can run mics directly into the mic in jack, however this is for soft low level music only if you do this with any amplified music you'll brickwall.get a battery box and run the mics into the BB then run the BB into the line in jack.trust me,you only get one shot at recording a show,so dont gamble.
