Length limit to TDIF or AES DB25 - DB25 snake ?
« on: May 01, 2009, 10:04:23 AM »
I have a client who's looking for a multi-channel digital cable in excess of 150 ft., to connect a Tascam DM-3200 to a Digidesign 192 I/O (DSUB, 25 pin connectors).  Would need to transmit 192KHz sample rate without problems.

I pretty much determined that such a cable running TDIF data format is not advisable.  However, the Digidesign 192 I/O has AES in DB25 format. The Tascam is capable of the same via an expansion card.  Would a AES DB25 cable stretch that far without degrading the signal ?

Any knowledge on this would be very much appreciated- thanks!

Fritz

By the way, I found DA202-8P, eight channel digital Canare cable, terminated with the DB25 connectors, which I think should be good for lengths up to 180 meters, or 590 feet.  Anyone's experience though with such a cable and length would be great to know

should be ok. Can you find out the impedance and voltage of the output signal? Canare could probably tell you the loss per foot. You'll also want to know the sensitivity of the input. If you try it and it drops out, perhaps there are signal amplifiers. I would call the manufactures tho, they will have the best answers ;)

TDIF is a no on this distance.

AES is OK if you use the correct 110 ohm cable. 1000 feet should be expected then, there are examples of more.

Personally I would add word clock cable as well, 75 ohm coax.

Thanks folks!  I'll try to get more info on the output and input specs!  Fingers crossed :-\
