... wish they’d show it next to something, though (or show specs)

It is rather large but I am sure it’s smaller then the d1/d50/d100 + the XLR-1

But not the M10 + the XLR-1 which will probably sound better.

Since I will most likely be buying the D10 (having bought every PCM Sony recorder since the D50), I will be able to test that claim.

Damn that makes the A10 look tiny and the D10 looks ginormous.

It is rather large but I am sure it’s smaller then the d1/d50/d100 + the XLR-1

SONY PCM D1 Dimensions (WxDxH)   2.8 x 1.3 x 7.6" (72 x 32.7 x 193mm)

SONY PCM D10 DIMENSIONS (W X H X D)
Approx 80.2 x 197.6 x 37.4 mm Approx 3.16 x 7.78 x 1.48 inches

SONY PCM D50 dimensions: 2.9 x 6.1 x 1.3" (74 x 155 x 33mm) (Not Including Projecting Parts and Controls)

SONY PCM D100 dimensions (W x H x D)   2.80 x 6.10 x 1.25" (71.12 x 154.90 x 31.75 mm)

SD MixPre3 dimensions: 36 mm x 144 mm x 110 mm (H x W x D); 1.40” x 5.68” x 4.35”

The D10 is huge. It's the biggest, thickest SONY PCM recorder (excluding the XLR-1). It's not even clear if it has a size advantage over the SD MixPre3 if you don't need the mics.

IMHO the mics are a waste of space.  If someone is buying a unit with XLRs they are not likely to be using internal mics.  Good luck with it Sony but not something that comes close to what I would need.

Here are some more pictures. Someone in Japan even tore it down.

What I find funny is the praise the built-in AK4558 ADCs get when they can be had for $2-3 a piece.

If the mics are as good as the D100’s, they could be quite handy, in a pinch.

But I too wish Sony would bring out a box like the old TCD5M or D10proii, with xlr phantom, but also digital I/O, double card slots, DSD, etc.

There are plenty of situations where built in mics would be fine.  For example, recording lectures, presentations etc.
I could also see having this set up semi-permanently in your studio, practice space, with external mics plugged in.
I've always loved the Sony gear.  Get an M10 for portable recording, D10 for open recording.

Here is rough size comparison of recorders projected to 2D. Bottom parts show thickness.  :)
AKG CK61s > Nbob Actives > Naiant IPA > Sony A10
Countryman B3s > Sony A10

You know the XLR-1 doesn't have a pre-amp right?

Yes, I use it a lot with my D100. I think it's fantastic, expensive but fantastic.

New link:

And before we go any further, in the attached pic, there it is... the HOLD button...
i don't use headphones but think it's cool you can switch fast and easy between stereo/l/r.
Notice it has line in too.
Battery life is crazy good
Be cooler if it got rid of the mics and was more compact imo, close to 8" is to big for me to "upgrade"
Mics - AKG ck61/ck63 (c480b & Naiant actives), SP-BMC-2
XLR Cables - Silver Path w/Darktrain stubbies
Interconnect Cables - Dogstar (XLR), Darktrain (RCA > 1/8) (1/8 > 1/8), and Kind Kables (1/8f > 1/4)
Preamps - Naiant Littlebox & Tinybox
Recorders - PCM-M10 & DR-60D
