I used them in race cars. they work great there, they take beating. Saw one hit the track and still work after about a 50mph fall.

what do you want to use it for?

I use mine for skiing and mountain biking mostly. Works great for that for the most part. My only complaint is performance in bright light (like when riding into the sun). I would live if they had an option to run a polarizer filter on it.

I haven't used the new high end one, but was thinking of picking one up for a second angle, and possible concert use since it works much better in low light.

A friend of mine used one for this:

I'm pretty sure it's the black and white footage from the side of the stage.

I picked up a hero2 in december. i like it a lot and its much smaller than you would think. There's no LCD screen but ours came with a wifi pack that allows you to use your smartphone, with an app, to control the camera. You can buy different cases like a dive housing or a skeleton housing where you can have access to mic-in on the unit. You can also do time-lapses upto a minute interval, although I have not tried time lapses on the gopro yet.

The hero3 black looks very nice because of its extended filming modes but this model will set you back $400. The advantage to this model is wifi is built in and its smaller than hero2 models and it includes a remote to control it.

it can even be used in taping: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sI14uCX8msI

I love go-pro's. They are a hoot! Both for outdoor adventures, but also concert shooting.

As someone said above, if you don't have the lcd or wifi bacpac then you have to guess a bit when you aim it, but as the field of view is so wide, most often it works out.

I used a variety of cams for these two videos. Flipcams (on the sides) Drift HD (on the drums) Panasonic GF1 (behind the drums) two go pros (towards the brass and on the keyboards) and the two big main cams.
(yep, 8 cams...and one cameraman!)

KRSB- What video software do you use? I sort of like the multiple video streams on the same page at times. I have never seen that in Sony Vegas.

I like this style of editing, have never found a client that liked it

@ Coloartist you can do it in Sony Vegas with Keyframing

Here are a couple of vids I did using keyframing in Vegas:

1 show : 8 cameras
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-HCE4Cb4PY

26 cameras : 1 song
http://vimeo.com/1837623

And for those of you liking Gopros for concert shooting, their are MUCH better choices in that price range, like a sony Hx9v, go pros are great for action shots in daylight, not so great for concerts in low light

Thanks. I will try it. I don't like it all the time, but I think it would be nice to stick in a video once in a while.

Sorry to be slow to reply.

Editing was in Final Cut Pro

It's true that not everyone in the band loved the edit with all the boxes over the second edit which was a little more traditional, but I managed to argue that we go that route as it hid all the different color balances. Also it hides a bit that there is no camera movement in most of the cameras.

Not sure how the sound mix was done. They captured the monitor mix so grabbed all the instruments individually and then remixed it adding a little atmosphere from the audio from my main cam

Yes, shoestringconcerts is right, the GoPro's do need a lot of light. It's a good point.

All in all a lot of fun considering I had 24hr notice to get ready so really was just flying by the seat of my pants for the shoot.

so, do they release these on any sort of schedule?  wondering when the "4" might come out?

The 3 just came out. I wouldn't expect anything new for at least a year. The 3 was actually the first significant change since the first one.

A buddy of mine is the sales rep for them in Colorado. I might see if he'll let me borrow one of the new ones to test at a show. I wouldn't mind getting some video for Mike Cooley when he comes here.

I'll be there too, so you will be free to move around while I guard the gear. Do it.

I have a HERO2 that I typically use as a drum cam. Wouldn't mind adding another.

Couple examples where it's used:

My son uses one for various projects, like mounted on his kayak, the jet ski and as an additional cam for shows we tape. I'll post a cool example when I get home. Can't seem to do it from work.

Any decently priced video software that would work well with gopro videos?  Basically just needing to add audio over the top

You can do it in REAPER or Avidemux, iMovie on the Mac or WMM whatever on the PC.

i can get 25% off silver or black tomorrow and tomorrow only.  Texas has 8.25% sales tax added after discount and then add whatever shipping you want.  you must be willing to paypal as a "gift" to avoid unnecessary fees.

first person to reply which model they want (silver or black) here AND then pm me their details on or before December 9th, 2013 gets it.

Surprised at how well the audio on the GoPro came out...i've got the Hero 3+ Black edition.  Ended up mixing both my stage lip audio and the GoPro audio

I use gopro hero 3 black cameras, two of them, for side shots on my concert videos, whenever possible. At Ashkenaz, in Berkeley, i put up mounts on the poles a year ago and they're all still up. Used em the day after Xmas. Here's one of Abja and the Lionz of Kush at Ashkenaz:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62K6KmnxPfY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62K6KmnxPfY) . The close ups are my old sony hdr hc9. I always get to use them at festivals, at clubs its hit and miss depending on friendliness. Moe's in Santa Cruz has a nice spot to stash a camera across from the band.

Resurrecting this old,old thread...

So I found a GoPro on the side of the street ome time ago and for the heck of it tried it out taping Tab Benoit the other night.  I knew it would be too far from the balcony but wanted to see what it would look like.  The video isn't too bad, the stage fills about 1/3 of the screen in VCL but...the audio was startlingly good.  Probably on par with the CA14 omnis i ran, maybe better (but in mono).  Everything is clear and only a tiny bit of distortion at the very loudest guitar power chords.  How is this possible?
