can not open my WAV file in Audacity or Wavelab
« on: June 08, 2016, 04:01:06 AM »
Hi all,

Does someone know how to fix this problem, so I can load it into Audacity or Wavelab??
Thanks in advance

never had this before, transfered my WAV file from my recorder with USB cable to my hard drive (same way as i do always), tried to play it back (use JetAudio) but the file won't play.
Tried to open it in Audacity, nothing shows up, then to WaveLab same problem.
Took out the SD card and tried to transfer it with an adapter, all of the above i tried with the same results.
Can play it back with VLC mediaplayer though.

Didn't change my settings before or during recording, settings are 24bit 48k ... BUT the log file says it's 24bit 44.1k

Since it shows a non-0 file size and it plays back in VLC you know the data is actually there.

Read the Data Recovery and Corrupt or 0 byte file
sections of http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=117279.msg1567216#msg1567216 for possible methods of recovery (or writing a new header).

One tip: make a copy of the file and always work on the copy, NOT the original so if what you try doesn't work you still have a file to try a different fix on another copy of it.

1) Did you try in wavlab
file - new
Fill out fields

Bits/sample:                  24
Samples/sec:                  44100

Then see if it opens?

2) Homegrown WAVE header repair utility

http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=72936.0

From his write up:
I saw that a few folks are getting corrupted headers in their wave files and having a struggle with the existing utilities trying to fix the problem. So I cobbled together a wave header repair utility this last weekend that may help... 'cause I hate to see good music go to waste

As you see, you need to know a little about the file... the number of bits, the samples per second, and the number of mics... while that might stump a n00b, I don't think you'll have any problem.

=================================================================

MAKE SURE YOU MAKE A COPY OF THE FILE BEFORE YOU DO THIS!!!

Let us know if it works...

Andrea82 has it documented well.  I used it with my David Gilmour master.

I wonder if using IMPORT>RAW might make a difference?

I had something simar happen with iZotope.  I could open the files I samplitude, but not iZotope.  I did wav > flac > wav.  That worked, headers got stripped when decoding back to wav

I've recently recovered two zero byte WAV files by using Windows CHKDSK to recover the files (partially) and then used VLC to complete the conversion of it to a workable WAV file @ 44.1/16.  This video walks you through the process quite nicely.

ahem, since English isn't my mother language, and I'm, compared to most of you, computer illiterate, a lot sounds like abracadabra to my ears  :(

I read everything (incl. links) several times, I tried the most simple one (to me)..... loading it in CD WAVE EDITOR ...... hey I'm a n00b, says what is wrong and what to do, made a new folder and exported the fixed files .... it now opens in what i normally use (JetAudio, Audacity, Wavelab)

thanks a lot !!

I've had that happen before. The suggestion already made to import the raw pcm instead of opening the WAV file might be all you need to do. Good luck!

Glad to hear it was resolved.  It is a good idea to start simple and see if that does it...
