is it possible to send power via a firewire pcmcia cardbus adaptor on windows XP, i saw this and would love to get one for my band when they come out, just dont have a firewire connection on my laptop and would buy a cardbus firewire pcmcia card if it supplies power, any of you computer geeks know the answer to this one?

the Edirol tech gave me some really good techy info about the unit.

Inquiring minds want to know.   :)

I wonder if the preamp and/or AD is any different than the UA-5 ?

I was fortunate enough to be on the Edirol developer list for the ua5, and was able to get one a few months before they were released for retail sales.  I've emailed Edirol with the same request (to beat on one for review and to get it early and cheap!), so we'll see.  Maybe i'll get lucky again.

if its just the same as the ua-5, then I dont need a different box that costs 2x as much just for firewire output and toslink jacks on the front.
though, the meetering feature would be an added benefit.

I think you need an external power source to pass power through the card, and even then, only on some cards. If I'm wrong, post a link b/c I'm sure it'd help a few others too.

As far as I know the answer is ... are you ready ... get a mac! *ducks*
Out of the game … for now?

If I can see clearly, it takes DC, so power shouldn't be too big a deal.  Whether it works stand alone should be the big question.

i'd plan on using it with a computer, so standalone isnt a problem, just need to power that sucker, dont have firewire that produces juice

I heard back from my Edirol contact.  They will be seindng me a demo unit in April sometime.  I get it for a month to review, and if i want to buy it I can acquire it at a discount, though i dont know how much.
I asked my contact, who is one of their techies, about the upgrades/differences from the UA-5s analog section and A/D/A and am waiting to hear back from them.  I'll be sure to post it when I do.  Im hoping they made some changes.  I believe the A/D/A might be different as they are talking about 192khz performance, but i'd be surprised if the mic pres are any different.  We'll see!

I heard from my contact again concerning the questions i asked above.
his responce:

Hi Nick,
Yes the pre's are different from the UA-5 as are the A/D converters.  I
can't get into specifics because our engineers don't like me to, but they're really well matched together & they are really clean.  Off the record, the preliminary tests suggest a S:N of over 100dB.
