Feeding camcorder plug-in power to mixer headphone jack
« on: April 11, 2013, 07:51:03 AM »
Need to video pastor at church.  Camera is a Sony HDR-CX260V.  Mixer is a Peavey PV-14.  Pastor uses wireless mic.   Camera has a "mic in" with nominal plug-in power (I'm guessing several volts, spec not listed).  Camera does not have adjustable volume control.  Thought I might patch out of a headphone jack into the camera.  The headphone jack has volume control.

Question:  Would the idea of sending 5-10V from the camera's plug-in-power to the mixer headphone jack be a concern in terms of damaging anything?

Thanks for any help.

I wouldn't have thought twice about doing this.

Not sure I can back that up with science though.

I have done this but it was quite a while ago. I feed a video camera with the headphone output from my Sony D8 dAT deck, that was patched out of the soundboard.  It worked, but I have no idea what kind of camera is was other than it was a Hi8 video camera.
Occasionally....music mics record

I have gone line out of a littlebox and m10 as well as headphone out to a canon many times
The biggest issue is going to be levels and distortion
If I where you test it out a few times in advance because if the signal is to hot your are screwed
I use a -20dbcable and it works great with my camera
Mics - AKG ck61/ck63 (c480b & Naiant actives), SP-BMC-2
XLR Cables - Silver Path w/Darktrain stubbies
Interconnect Cables - Dogstar (XLR), Darktrain (RCA > 1/8) (1/8 > 1/8), and Kind Kables (1/8f > 1/4)
Preamps - Naiant Littlebox & Tinybox
Recorders - PCM-M10 & DR-60D

Thanks everybody.  I will have time to test it.  I suppose if I feed it the lowest signal possible and still get distortion I'll get an attenuator.

Thanks for the caution, Jon.  Contacted Peavey, who basically said not to feed anything into that headphone amp.  Contacted Sony, who said that the plug in power from the camera could not be turned off.

It looks like my only option is to buy or have built a cable with a blocking capacitor in it.  Any suggestions as far as that goes?

Jon,

This one does not mention impedance matching.  Assuming it doesn't, perhaps this cable?

Followup:  I bought a cable with a blocking capacitor, and it works well, considering that the whole setup is imperfect to begin with.
