pre-amp > UA-5 (p-mod)
« on: July 21, 2003, 05:38:02 PM »
I'm thinking about getting one of those JK Labs DVC boxes. Can one go from RCA outs on the JK Labs DVC to the XLR ins on the UA-5 (p-mod)? I'd like to do this to utilize the p-mod and the ability to control the L/R inputs independently when I'm not stealthing

Thanks,
Rick

Well, here is my opinion on the a/d in the ua-5, so if that is the goal of this, to utilize just the a/d here goes...

The a/d is just not that good.  Some people like it.  I personally think it sounds a lot like that of the da-p1's!  Maybe the mod's change this, but I have only used one without a pre mod!  I would have been just as happy running line-in to an m1 as I was with the adc of the ua-5.  I think were the ua-5 shines is that it is easy as all hell to use, provides phantom, and with the right pre mod, sounds decent!  And it is cheap!  The stock pre in the ua-5 is just awful to my ears if aplying any more than about 12 o'clock worth of gain.  YMMV

Hey all-

I disagree with Daryan.  I just purchased a UA5 with the warm mod, and am throughly pleased.  I think that the a/d on the UA5 is much better than the a/d on my D7.  Previously I was running Earthworks into a MP2 straight into my deck, the UA5 gives me more bass, and a clearer sharper sound.  To me it sounds more crispy and very natural.

It would be interesting (and a better comparision) to use the MP2 and the UA5 together...which I will do sometime soon and let y'all know what I thought.

I do agree that the UA5 is super easy to use....definatly sounds better if you keep it from hitting the red zone (-3db).

I also agree that the ad is far superior to that of the d7/d8, just not the m1/d100 which most of us are using these days!  Have you actually been able to isolate the a/d or are you just going off of initial listening?

I heard a comp disc with v3/ua-5 a while ago and I came to the conclusion that the UA-5 sounds great for the money, but the A/D stage is a little weak.  Doug's pre mods work wonders for the thing, though.  However, for a standalone A/D, I'd use something else.  As always, YMMV

Why exactly would you run v3->ua5 into a jb3.  Why not v3->jb3 with a convertor?  I was under the assumption that the ua-5 is not bit perfect and would resample the digital data before it hits the jb3.  Just a thought...you need to get some higher end mics to compliment that pre!!!!

Its not mine, Jon R isnt taping so his letting me test it out.

And i am working on the new mics as we speak.

So i should not even run the ua5. Is that what you are saying?

I've heard that the JB3 has issues running off the V3 through a converter box, as in it won't see the signal.  Can anyone confirm/deny this?

If it aint an issue, run V3>UA5 set I and V3 set II, maybe UA5>V3 for the encore.  I'll spot you the 480's if you want 'em as well.

Well I think the w-mod UA5 is killer. And Doug does change the chips that drive the ADC:

from:http://www.oade.com/Forum/Tapers/viewtopic.php?id=8&t_id=11
"While the RCA inputs do benefit from the MOD as the chips that drive the ADC have been changed, it did not get the total re work the XLR inputs got."

Basically I think the AD in the UA5 is far superior to the m1/D100 or the DA-P1, and I own a wmod UA5, a D100 and a P1. I think the Analog inputs on the stock UA5 are so poor that you need the mod to get the full performance of the AD even when running an outboard pre. If you run xlr in and turn the knobs all the way down then you are basically utilizing just the AD in the UA5 with the benefit's of Dougs signal path upgrade.

Doug himself told me that he thinks the UA5 is better than the modSBM-1! I'm not saying you should just take his word for it, trust your ears, but thats quite a statement.
