Topic: Ribbon mics?

Don't really know anything about ribbon mics. But I read somewhere that they're supposed to have great detail. I also read that they're somewhat fragile though. Anyone ever used 'em in the field?

Never mind. I just found an old thread that said pretty much what I had read elsewhere. Great detail and sound. Too fragile for the field.

I have heard some 3 mic recordings with a ribbon mic for the middle channel, sounds very, very nice if done properly.

some guys over at tapeop.com were humping the ribbon mics when used for vocals, but said they aren't right for every vocalist.  It was also mentioned that if the singer moves even a couple of milimeters that the sound will greatly vary  so caution when recording must be taken. I guess that also adds to their fagile nature.

agreed, have to be used in the right situation.

He did say that it was very fragile, though.  I think that may be why he stopped using it...
