I think damn near everyone in the state of AL is/was running that combo, and for good reason.

The two were made for each other!

I love the combo. Like Lee said they were made for each other.

Now If I can just get my configurations down I'll have it going on.
Listening to my tapes on a decent playback system now. I can tell I'm doing something wrong. When running DIN my left side is consistently lacking something compared to the right channel. When I set the balance to the right a little & crank it up it sounds so much better.

Any suggestions? Maybe I'll try the 90deg cutout pattern that I've seen some people use.

The two were made for each other!

so you're saying saying if i have a w-mod UA5 and want to upgrade mics i should go team AKG with the 480s :smoking:?

EDIT: I dunno Team ADK TL is looking nice though. what about km184s>w-mod?

'bout time you got around to it!

Seriously, you need a damn bombsight with those DIN hypers to make sure you get 'em pointed dead center.  Maybe I should've taken it easy in the lot.  Live and learn, I guess.

I ran 184s with the wua5 for a little while and the 480s combo blew them out of the water. Drop me a line and i could shoot you some comparisons.

my adk's sound a lot better with the wmod ua-5 than they did with the mp-2 -> ad500e.  plus it is a lot less gear to lug around.

Less gear to lug is a good thing, no doubt.  Especially if it allows you to carry one less battery!

My copy of Panic 7-18 in mobile was 483s>wUA5>jb3 is floating around somewhere.

I'll start a torrent of it up on monday when i get back in town.
Let me know if you want to hear some of the 184s with the wua5 also. Although i can almost assure you that you will like the akgs better.

guess i 'll go search the archive ro see if there is a show i i like with that source.

Thanks,

WARNING!  Purely subjective opinion follows...

Based on what I like to hear, I'd rank the wmod UA-5 higher than most "high end" gear when used with the 480's.  I don't like the sound of the Grace pre's with them, and never have liked what the AD-20 and AD2K+ do to them with any pre.  In order of preference, my top 3 combos with the 480's are as follows:

480>PSP-2
480>m148
480>wmod UA-5
480>m248

You're not losing much, IMHO, by going with the warm ua-5 as opposed to a V3 or other upper tier gear.

Keep in mind that a DMB stack tape isn't exactly representative of your more common taping situations.  It'll give you a good idea of low/mid/high balance, but soundstaging will be almost nil.

YMMV

agreed.  eric naylor has made some great sounding stack tapes but stack tapes really aren't the best tapes do a serious comparison.  it's cool to listen to a few of them when trying to make a decision but i wouldn't buy anything based soley on them.
