Title: What do "din" and "nos" mean in the context of live recordings?
Post by: lmgbtapes on July 11, 2018, 01:51:40 AM
Hi all.. sorry if there's a better place for this question rather than a whole topic here, please point me in the right direction if this is the wrong way to ask such a minor thing!

In this recording: https://archive.org/details/EveryoneOrchestra2016-11-10.tcca-flac16

I see the following:

Church Audio CA-14 omni (nos)>CA-9100 & CA-14 card (din)>CA-UBB2>OCM R44>hdsd card @ 44.1 kHz 16 bit wav. mics 7.5' up OTS ROC

If these were to say (AUD) I would know it means audience, but what do the "nos" and "din" mean?

Thank you!

Not 100% sure about the din part.

din: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIN_connector (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIN_connector)

nos: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/NOS_stereo_technique (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/NOS_stereo_technique)

Ahh, thank you! I simply needed to add "technique" to my googling to yield the proper path.

Interesting that this person used the din technique with omnis. I have some reading to do :) Appreciate the reply.

Looks like they had the omnis in NOS and the cards in DIN.

Note that technically the only way to set up mics NOS is with cards, as that pattern is "part of" the overall setup.  That said, it's pretty common to still use abbreviations like NOS, DIN, ORTF, etc. even when the "correct" polar pattern isn't being used.  It's a lot simpler to say that subcards were set up NOS than it is to say that the subcards were spaced 30 cm apart at a 90 degree angle.

DIN is prob the most common setup for cards
DINa for hypers
You used to see a lot more AB then you do now it seems too

This isn't relevant, but every time I see NOS, I think New Old Stock LOL. Especially with tubes and electronics. ;D

Seeing NOS always makes me smile since I'm Dutch :)

For me, “NOS” is an abbreviation for “Shapeways is getting another $40 of my money.”

I taped my first show in NOS(ish) this week, instead of Point at Stacks (which wasn’t all that different) and thought it sounded great.

That said, I’m not sure what goes into the decision making process for choosing a configuration.

This thread is probably a decent place to start: http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=128037.0

I don't know what, if anything, the so-called "DIN" microphone arrangement has to do with the DIN standards organization. I've never heard of any DIN standard for using microphones.

And historically, if there were any such standard, "mixed methods" (directional microphones spaced some distance apart) surely wouldn't be chosen, since they're not mono-compatible. Back in the 1960s and 70s that was still a major concern because the majority of televisions and radios were still mono, and the central European broadcasting organizations were state-owned, and legally responsible to serve the general public.

That's my tape. Yes cards din Omni nos here's a breakdown. DINa=17cm/90* meant mainly for hypers/supercards
DIN=20cm/90* meant for cards
ORTF=17cm/110* meant for cards
Wide ORTF=27cm/110* on my old NOLABar, I liked this one with mk21 Subcards
NOS=30cm/90* meant for cards and wider capsules
PAS=Pointed At Stacks
POS=Pointed Outside Stacks
PIS=Pointed Inside Stacks
XY=90* one above the other meant for cards
