Not to be a spoilsport, but this unit requires a camera with a firewire DV or HDV out. As far as I can tell the 5D does not have this, and it's file format MOV is listed as non-compatible.

Cool unit, but one with a fairly limited use case. Hope you can find a way to make it work for you.

Yeah thats a great unit similar to what we use on our Sony Fx 1000s.We use the sony mrc1k.As scooby mentioned these only record thu firewire the benefit being you record your HDV stream to cf card and dont need to use tape.

Ok so it won't work with the 5d.  ::)   It will with the HV30 and XF100.  Limited use?  ALL HD cams have firewire out.  Plus I can take a patch at our multicam mix shows.  Like RRE NYE 2012.   >:D  Or any show where someone else is shooting.  Seems useful to me.   :)

Not to be a spoilsport, but this unit requires a camera with a firewire DV or HDV out. As far as I can tell the 5D does not have this, and it's file format MOV is listed as non-compatible.  And Willn I'm betting it was the cards.  You need fast ones for video.  60 MB/s min.

Won't work on xf100 either as there is no firewire.....only tape based cameras. You got a great deal though. You can set up your hv30 somewhere and just record to the unit and NOT to tape and with a 32GB CF card get 146mins. continuous recording.Or as you said hook to someone elses tape based cam and get a patch out.Beware that any time that person starts or stops or flips the tape the firewire will be interrupted for a sec. making a split and a sec. missing in your footage.Thats why i mention not using tape.Great deal for free although the battery looks pricey and the cradle.

How do you like shooting with the 5D....got any samples?
